Study of a dogger from before the port beam. Her gaff mainsail is set and her lateen mizzen, staysail and square topsail are brailed up. The ship carries a square-rigged spritsail under the bowsprit. In the Dutch language this sail is known as a "blind" (blinde) because it effectively blocks forward vision when set. A very similar drawing is preserved in the collection of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich (inv.no. PAF6634). Robinson dates the NMM drawing around 1685.

Condition

Overall excellent near mint condition.
Very minor paint cracks in the white to the lower right edge. A minor scratch in the u.r. corner (approx. 5 cm.). This work of monumental proportion is in very good and ready to display condition.
