Patterns of Panow: Dimensions of Mobility among the Pantaron Manobo
In this book chapter, Andrea Malaya M. Ragragio and Myfel D. Paluga unpack the indigenous category "panow" of Pantaron Manobo communities. Panow pertains to various notions of geographical or spatial mobility, meaning "to leave," "to travel," "to flee," "to expand," or simply, "to go somewhere."

Assistant Professor John Boy and Assistant Professor Sander Holsgens have written a new Leiden Anthropology Blog about Af AI-powered plagiarism detection tools in universities.
In their blog post titled ‘When all positives are false: the emergence of an academic whodunnit’, they discuss how or if academic integrity is at stake in the age of AI. Boy and Holsgens call into question whether these tools are a reflection of an education system that is fixated on metrics rather than self-development and why there has not been more consultation with instructors regarding the adoption of the technology. They suggest a new pedagogy in the era of generative AI is needed, beyond a focus on grades and credentials.
When all positives are false: the emergence of an academic whodunnit Many educators accept the idea that we need to systematically assess the performance of our students. Easily accessible writing tools complicate the practice of assessment: how do we gauge whether an assignment is original work? In the age of AI, academic integrity is at stake – or so we’re told...
Leiden University has signed a strategic partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), a bank committed to regional development. LU is the first European university to which the ADB has made a structural commitment
Leiden University will contribute its interdisciplinary expertise to work with the bank on various topics such as urbanisation, circular economy, water, biodiversity, and tax reform – thus adding its expertise to the significant investments the ADB is making for climate and poverty alleviation.
Professor of Anthropology of Digital Diversity Bart Barendregt: ‘The collaboration with the ADB, and through them with the ADB member states, is a fantastic opportunity to solve some of the most pressing issues of our time. Big challenges call for big collaboration. No discipline alone has the answers, but together, and with the ADB’s country experts and the solution-focused approach they advocate, we will come a long way.’

Today's young people live in a time of great, sometimes contradictory upheavals. Generation Z is more vulnerable yet empowered, inspired yet limited, and self-aware yet melancholic.
Generation Z: what kind of cohort is that?
In this NRC article, sociologist John Boy, together with Martijn Lampert and Lonneke van den Berg, discusses the three biggest paradoxes of Gen Z: limitless freedom but experiencing enormous stress, being culturally independent but economically dependent and being highly idealistic but also constantly distracted.
Read the full article (in Dutch).
Generatie Z is kwetsbaarder én mondiger, bevlogener én beperkter, zelfbewuster én zwaarmoediger.
Looking for answers to the pressing questions around the use of AI in society?
The Islamic world may have some insights to offer, according to Bart Barendregt, Professor of Anthropology of Digital Diversity. In his inaugural lecture on April 14th, Barendregt will discuss his research into the relationship between AI and Islam, examining the ways in which AI is being developed and used in Southeast Asia.
With a focus on three sectors - AI education, edutainment, and self-discipline - Barendregt is investigating the attitudes of developers and users towards AI, and what they hope for its role in the future. In addition to this research, Barendregt holds the UNESCO chair for Anthropology of Digital Diversity, through which he aims to bring together startups, Muslim communities, and anthropologists to discuss the development of AI.
While there are concerns around the rise of AI, Barendregt is optimistic, believing in human resilience and the ability of different cultures to find their own unique ways of integrating new technology.
How should we use AI? The Islamic world may have an answer The secular West is struggling with the rise of AI, but so too is Muslim Southeast Asia. What can we learn from each other?
Playing bingo and walking with senior citizens for research into social cohesion
Joining community seniors in fun activities like bingo, Dutch shuffleboard, and walks is regular for Marieke van der Heijden. She is a Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology master's student who's researching the De Kooi neighbourhood for the Learning with the City project. It's a unique opportunity for students to work on social concerns as part of their programme. Marieke is enthusiastic about this project. "It's relevant to the neighbourhood, and my research won't just sit on a shelf gathering dust!"

Graduating for your Master's doesn't only mean receiving your diploma, you also get to put your signature at 'the sweat room' (het zweetkamertje).
Last week three of our Master's students Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology received their diplomas at the Academy Building and signed the wall. Congratulations!
The Sweat Room is one of the most cherished spots at Leiden University. In the 18th century, the room was given the purpose suggested by its present-day name: it became a waiting room for students awaiting their exam results. Thousands of new graduates have written or signed their name
During the Open Day we asked prospective students 'What is Anthropology'. Among the answers: Culture, Diversity, People, Interaction, Behaviour, Ethnography, Behaviour. All correct. Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at Leiden University studies the everyday practices of individuals and groups around the world in relation to the complex global challenges of diversity, sustainability, and digitalisation.
Did you miss the Open Day? No worries! You can join the Experience Day on the 4th of April to get a glimpse of how it is to study Cultural Anthropology. You can also do the online experience or watch the video presentation on our website.

Stop stereotyping ‘girls with a migration background’
Culture, ethnicity, and religion are frequently framed as contradictory to sport participation in sport policy research and media reports. According to Jasmijn Rana and Kathrine van den Bogert, we can only combat unequal sport participation if we take sexism and racism in recreational sports and exercise seriously.
