There were days when Duck noticed something strange.
- Who are you? Why are you creeping along behind me?
- Good. You’ve finally noticed me. I am Death.
Duck was scared stiff. You could hardly blame her for that.
- You’ve come to fetch me?
- I have watched you since you were born… just in case.
This is an excerpt from the beautiful children’s book Duck, Death and the Tulip by Wolf Erlbruch. For many, this quote might seem in poor taste or at least uncomfortable: “Why are you talking to me about this subject? You can’t live thinking about this! It’s not a topic for children!”
Truth be told, adults are often not very skilled at discussing the big issues of existence with children.
Who do we protect when we avoid naming Death or use euphemisms to refer to it? Are we trying to protect children, or are we shielding ourselves from the fear that such discussions provoke in us? Is it not true that we lack the language to articulate Death and the emotions it evokes? Isn’t that why we often rely on social conventions when approaching someone who is grieving? The reality is, we often don’t know what to say, and what we do know becomes even more elusive when we have to speak to children...
NZIPP is pleased to confirm the start of a Reading Group on Psychoanalysis.
The group will run for two hours on Friday at 6:30 PM monthly, for six sessions per semester. NZIPP will have a member available each semester to facilitate the reading group and discussion. Dr Gustavo Restivo is available to run the first semester.
The dates for 2024 will be: 9th August, 6th September, 4th October, 1st November, 29th November, 13th December.
The venue is Psykhe Psychoanalytic Practice, 233 Mt Eden Rd.
Online attendance can be considered for those residing outside Auckland.
The fee is $250 per person for six sessions over one semester.
The readings for this semester are based on Freud’s work, as follows:
1909 Five Lectures on Psycho-analysis, SE Vol 11
1909 Family Romances, SE Vol 9
1913 On Beginning the Treatment, SE Vol 12
1915 Observations on Transference-Love, SE Vol 12
1917 Mourning and Melancholia, SE Vol 14
Further readings may be recommended during the group.
Participants will be professionals interested in psychoanalysis with some prior knowledge/training in the field. The number of participants will be 8 - 12.
