Māori Theatre Company Te Rākau Hua O Te Wao Tapu Trust present 'Unreel', a creative project centred on the negative impacts of electronic gaming (pokies) on families.
"It is our collective hope that the vibrance and musicality of Unreel not only entertains, but also provokes thought and stimulates kōrero about the social cost of gambling," the company says.
The show will be going on tour from 30 September - 14 October 2024. Ticket prices vary from $10 to $25 with a koha option too.

Today, 10 September, is World Su***de Prevention Day. We know through research that high-risk gambling behaviour is associated with increased risk of su***de.
When it comes to prevention, public health must work to develop effective, preventive measures to address the underlying reasons for the intersection of gambling harm and suicidality.
If you or a loved one is experiencing suicidality, you can phone Lifeline Aotearoa at 0508 828 865.
If either you, or someone you know, is in immediate danger, please call emergency services immediately on 111.
If you’re wanting to test your risk of gambling harm, PGF Services offers a free, confidential online screener that gives you a personalized report at the end.
You will get a comparison of your gambling against other people in New Zealand, and will learn more about your motivations to gamble.
At the end of the test, we also offer the option of sharing your results and talking it over with a gambling counsellor.
Visit: https://screener.pgf.nz/gambling-survey to take the test! 💙
Thank you for sharing your story, Colin 💙

Some Māori social media influencers are promoting online gambling by sharing promo codes and special discounts.
But another Māori influencer, Pairama Wright, has taken to his platform to share his own experiences with gambling, and says it’s the gambling operators that should be held to account for asking influencers to promote gambling to a specific demographic.

We are happy to announce that the International Gambling Conference dates have been confirmed for next year (which will be held Wednesday 10 July - Friday 12 July at Auckland University of Technology) and we are now calling for abstracts.
The IGC aims to enhance the skills of those who work in all areas of the preventing and minimising gambling harm sector, sharing knowledge about the latest research, public health interventions and treatment techniques, and encouraging national and international collaborations. The biennial conference attracts delegates from New Zealand and around the world.
We are also thrilled to confirm three amazing keynote speakers: Moko Tepania, Mayor of the Far North; Associate Prof Simone Rodda, Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Auckland University of Technology (AUT), and Dr Reece Bush-Evans, Senior Lecturer in Psychology and a member of the Gambling Research Group at Bournemouth University, UK.

Our Story
At PGF Services we are trained to help. Our qualified counsellors provide free, professional and confidential counselling for both gamblers and others affected by gambling.
A gambling problem (sometimes called a gambling addiction) can significantly impact your life and the lives of those closest to you. For many people, phoning a gambling helpline or seeking help from anyone at all can be a difficult step to take.
We also have support groups. While they are not run in the same way as Gamblers Anonymous, they are designed for people who would like to work towards and maintain being ‘gamblefree’ or in control of their gambling.
Talking about your gambling, or someone else’s gambling, can bring huge relief and help you get your life back on track. We are here so that you do not need to make changes by yourself without support.
