The fine for harming a white shark in New Zealand is a maximum of $250,000. We believe a fine of $600 is hardly meaningful punishment for this wanton act. Claiming he didn’t know it was a great white is a dubious excuse at best. We would like to see the law being upheld in a more meaningful way as a $600 fine simply is not enough of a deterrent.

Another white pointer has washed up on a beach, this time along the Australian Gold Coast. We sincerely hope that necropsies are performed on the three animals and the cause of death is publicised to ascertain if this threatened species has become even more vulnerable

A very sad demise far too early in its life. As can be seen in this article, at 15 feet in length, and estimated at 30 years old, she was not sexually mature- still a juvenile. This really highlights just how vulnerable the white shark is.

It's the second to have washed up in less than a month.

This is an extremely interesting article by David Shiffman and well worth reading. It makes sense that a white Shark population would move to avoid predators. Considering our orca populations, it would seem logical this theory can be applied here too.

The Mexican government has decided to close all public access to the waters around Guadalupe Island. There's pretty much no body keeping an eye on the largest sharks in the Pacific. That's concerning. Who knows what's going there. Without ecotourism in the area, bad folks get unmonitored access to this unique place. I really hope the sharks are safe. Only time will tell I guess.

New Zealand shark encounters caught on video As marine biologists and fishing communities report increasing shark numbers, close brushes with the animals are becoming more common.

Yesterday an 8' long juvenile female Great White shark washed up dead near tower 2. She had succumbed to injuries sustained from fishing activities. Great Whites are protected and must be safely released if accidentally caught. We took the opportunity to turn this unfortunate event into an educational opportunity for our visitors. Juvenile Great Whites have become a frequent visitor to the Torrey Pines coastal area. The device hanging from her back is a Geo tracker installed by Cal State Long Beach.
