Shortly after Leys Institute Library closed in 2019 it was photographed. You can find the full collection of photos on Kura one even features a few faces that might be familiar.
Leys Institute was opened in 1905, followed a year later by the adjoining gymnasium. The building was funded by an endowment from Williams Leys who died in 1899. The funds were supplemented by his younger brother Thomson Leys, who built and furnished the library, on the provision that the City Council provided a suitable site for the building. Since 1905 the staff of Leys and the community have done their best to live up to the ideals and vision of the founders.
This week, we have Chloe from Little Leys library who will highlight a new collection that showcases the beloved library building.
“I have worked at Leys throughout my career, originally as a casual staff member in 2012, I then joined the team as Children’s Librarian in 2016 and became Community Library Manager in 2020. Working in such a unique building was a privilege but the thing that made it special was the community (who thankfully now visit us at Little Leys). On 20th December 2019 when Leys closed, it was an honour to host the numerous members of our community who stopped by to say ‘see you again’ to a space that meant so much to each one of them. Packing up the collection and moving to the Little Library was an emotional journey for many in the team, myself included. I love this collection of photographs that so beautifully capture the community living room that was Leys Institute in 2019. I cannot articulate why but one of my favourite photographs is the Lost Property box of sunglasses and reading glasses. For now, Leys Institute Little Library at 14 Jervois Road serves the communities of Ponsonby, St Mary’s Bay, Herne Bay and many more. One day in the future the library will return to its stately home at 20 St Marys Road.”
If you have any memories of the Leys Institute, do leave a comment. 🕶🤩

We were saddened this morning to wake to the news of the passing of Nobel Prize-winning Canadian writer Alice Munro. She was often compared to Russian writer Anton Chekhov for the insight and compassion found in her stories.
If you haven't read her work or perhaps feel it is time for a reread, you can request many titles from the library here:
