Less than a year after handing over the keys to a new home for their son and family, we were delighted to do it again for Mum and Dad who relocated to beautiful Cromwell.

What is passive solar? Designing for optimal sunlight takes advantage of a building's site, climate, and materials to minimise energy use. A well-designed passive solar home firstly reduces heating and cooling loads through energy-efficiency strategies and then meets those reduced loads in whole, or in part with solar energy.

5 elements of this include:

The Light Collector (aperture) refers to large, sun-facing glassed (windowed) areas in your home at which sunlight can enter the building - in New Zealand this is to the North.

The Heat Absorber - is a hard, darkened surface ie. masonry wall or floor that sits in the direct path of the sunlight and absorbs heat throughout the day, storing it in the ‘thermal mass’ behind it and releasing it from there.

The Thermal mass is the material that retains or stores the heat produced by sunlight. This could be a sun-facing brick or feature wall or a concrete slab.

The Distribution is the method by which the stored energy, or heat collected in the thermal mass circulates throughout the house. ie. fans or ducts, or thermal material which radiates warmth collected throughout the day into the home overnight.

Control - the design is controlled to suit the season ie. airflow and ventilation taking advantage of the breeze by placing windows to capture and circulate the cool air throughout the home.
