Today marks the Winter Solstice - the longest night of the year, when the Earth's axis is furthest away from the sun. It is also the perfect indication, here in Aotearoa, of the commencement of the ski season.

NZ SNOWDRIFT, captured in 1929, showcases the beautiful scenery that surrounds the Tongariro National Park, with footage of the lush snowy mountains of the central plateau.

PERSONAL RECORD. HIGGS, DENNIS. [CROWD WAITING FOR THE BEATLES AT ST. GEORGE HOTEL WELLINGTON] 20/06/2024

It was 60 years ago today that the Beatles arrived in New Zealand. The biggest rock and roll band in the world touched down in Wellington and played two shows before traveling to Auckland, Dunedin and Christchurch. They were met by thousands of screaming fans, especially teenage girls and young women, whose behaviour took many older people aback. The Youthquake had officially arrived.

This month we mark the 75th anniversary of the first pop song recorded and published entirely in New Zealand. “Blue Smoke” was written by Ruru Karaitiana in 1940, as the 28th New Zealand Māori Battalion was traveling to war in Europe on the troopship Aquitania. Karaitiana was inspired by the sight of smoke from the ship blowing back toward home, as he and the other men were carried away to an unknown fate:

Blue smoke goes drifting by
into the deep blue sky
My memories of home
will never die.

We are thrilled to be able to share the 1949 Pixie Williams version of "Blue Smoke" that helped launch the New Zealand recording industry, which has been newly added to the online collection for the 75th anniversary. Many thanks to the Karaitiana whānau for the permission.

On 14 June 1984, then Prime Minister Robert Muldoon made the unusual choice to call a snap election. This episode came to be nicknamed the Schnapps Election, as the PM was widely believed to be intoxicated when he made the announcement. Exactly one month later, New Zealanders went to the polls and voted in a new government. This RNZ audio captures some of the immediate reactions.

🌟 Our annual Matariki compilation is now playing online, as well as in selected libraries and museums. This year, we took inspiration from the whakataukī "Hauhake tū, ka tō Matariki - the harvest ends when Matariki sets.”

🌟 One of the themes this year for Matariki is Heri Kai - the carrying or conveying of food. Our programme focuses on the stars in the Matariki cluster that relate to food: Waitī, Waitā, Tupuānuku and Tupuārangi. Through archival film and video, we invite you to learn about these four Matariki stars, and their traditional connections to kai.

🌟 Huakina mai te tatau o te whare kauanuanu, kia rongo atu ai te motu i ngā hina kōrero mō ngā whetū o te tau, ā Matariki.

Nei ko te reo o maruwehi e tere atu nei:

Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision would like to give a big mihi and extend many thanks to the team at the Wairarapa Film Festival. It was an honour and privilege to present the Tangata Whenua series at this year's festival.

Tangata Whenua (1974) documents an era that brought forth enormous change for iwi Māori. It features kōrero from many iwi, each sharing their stories of belonging, tikanga, loss of whenua/land, the future, whilst navigating the world, and adapting to the radical changes that were taking place in New Zealand in the 1970s.

The Wairarapa Film Festival, e whiti āta ana ngā taonga kōrero, kia tuarihia ngā pakiwaitara haumako o te tangata whenua, o te pā whakawairua. Ka mutu, me mihi ka tika ki te whanau Pēwhairangi mō koutou i whakakanohi i te kaitiakitanga, ki a koe anō hoki e Kim Workman, i ngā tuku ihotanga āu i roto i ēnei taonga whitiāhua.

Kei te mana whakahaere, ngā iwi kaupeka o Rangitāne, o Kahungunu, nei ka mihi, nei ka mihi.

On 25 May 1978, 222 protestors were forcibly evicted from Takaparawhau (Bastion Point) after a peaceful 506-day occupation. Once owners of 80,000 acres of pristine land, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei saw their holdings reduced to a mere quarter acre urupā (cemetery).

In this audio item, Whai Ngata interviews Joe Hawke - reformer, advocate and prominent kaumātua of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei who led the occupation.
