When Alan Preston kicked off Unity Books in 1967, the shop was tiny and cerebral and only whimsically-commercial, a wedge within the OUP showrooms. Expanding 5 years later into the 2nd of 4 eventual locations on Willis Street, Alan started the pattern of hiring hugely talented & charismatic bookselling staff (including many writers and musicians). And to augment the exciting bursts of local publis

Ake Ake Ake A Forever Language!
This was the theme for Aotearoa's 2024 Māori Language Week.
Ake Ake Ake symbolised resilience and hope, like the native ake ake tree which is known for its strong wood and ability to grow in harsh climates. It is durable just like te reo Māori. And we couldn't think of a more perfect image as we too in store, support, grow and develop our own use of the reo all year.

Kia kaha te reo Māori.

We are so excited because two incredible new books are available in store now!!!

The Voyage Home by Pat Barker
"After ten blood-filled years, the war is over. Troy lies in smoking ruins as the victorious Greeks fill their ships with the spoils of battle.

Alongside the treasures looted are the many Trojan women captured by the Greeks – among them the legendary prophetess Cassandra, and her watchful maid, Ritsa. Enslaved as concubine – war-wife – to King Agamemnon, Cassandra is plagued by visions of his death – and her own – while Ritsa is forced to bear witness to both Cassandra’s frenzies and the horrors to come.

Meanwhile, awaiting the fleet’s return is Queen Clytemnestra, vengeful wife of Agamemnon. Heart-shattered by her husband’s choice to sacrifice their eldest daughter to the gods in exchange for a fair wind to Troy, she has spent this long decade plotting retribution, in a palace haunted by child-ghosts.

As one wife journeys toward the other, united by the vision of Agamemnon’s death, one thing is certain: this long-awaited homecoming will change everyone’s fates forever."

Death at the Sign of the Rook by Kate Atkinson
"Welcome to Rook Hall.

The stage is set. The players are ready. By night’s end, a murderer will be revealed.

Ex-detective Jackson Brodie is staving off a bad case of midlife malaise when he is called to a sleepy Yorkshire town, and the seemingly tedious matter of a stolen painting. But one theft leads to another, including the disappearance of a valuable Turner from Burton Makepeace, home to Lady Milton and her family. Once a magnificent country house, Burton Makepeace has now partially been converted into a hotel, hosting Murder Mystery weekends.

As paying guests, a vicar, an ex-army officer, impecunious aristocrats, and old friends converge, we are treated a fiendishly clever mystery; one that pays homage to the masters of the genre—from Agatha Christie to Dorothy Sayers.

Brilliantly inventive, with all of Atkinson’s signature wit, wordplay and narrative brio, Death at the Sign of the Rook may be Jackson Brodie’s most outrageous and memorable case yet."

Um we are so goddamn excited to be launching our first!! ever!! book!! and to get to come and launch it at one of our fave bookstores: Unity Books!!

We couldn’t think of a better way to send this thing out into the world than with a bunch of our favourite worn-out women (or worn-out people), hanging out and trying to make sense of all our burning questions about the world, ourselves, whether we hate our jobs or just need a bit of sleep, and whether good love is really coming for us or if we’ll be stuck in situationships until we die.

Where? Unity Books Wellington, 57 Willis Street
When? Thursday September 19th, 6-8pm
What can you expect? An evening of love, grief, girlhood, friendship, but mostly, a whole lot of fu***ng fun and phoenixing
