INTERNATIONAL MENS DAY
Written by WHATARANGI WINIATA:
Whatarangi is Tauira Māori of Te Herenga Waka studying Masters of Architecture Professional, with a passion of Māori sustainability lead to an Architecture Internship at Tennent Brown Architects for the 2023-2024 Summer.
Tennent Brown Architects recently celebrated International Men's Day. The purpose of the day was to discuss improving mental and physical well-being within the construction industry. TBA united together to learn and discuss “Mates in Construction”, in particular. The results and research gathered by Mates in Construction showcases the impact of the workload in the construction industry can have on employees. The results show Māori men are significantly over-represented in the statistics. Mates of Construction offer opportunities and help for construction workers to cope and overcome these mental obstacles. The concept of Whare Tapawhā is utilised, encouraging men to thrive and improve their Taha Tinana (Physical Well-being), Taha Hinengaro (Mental Well-being), Taha Wairua (Spritual Well-being), and Taha Whānau (Family Well-being). When these four aspects are balanced, then we thrive.

"...lending a sense of natural beauty that harks back to the original stone building... juxtaposed against concrete elements and tied together by a substantial, chunky roofline with timber-lined eaves, which has the effect of creating a physical as well as an emotional shelter over the building."

Pā Reo, Ōtaki, 2023.
Pā Reo Campus is now complete! Designed to reflect and support ngā kaupapa o Te Wānanga o Raukawa.
The creation of Pā Reo was to create an enclave of administrative, research and educational facilities, within a broader campus master plan, to support te reo Māori ānake.
Fantastic to see the project complete, so we'll be sharing a variety of images in the coming weeks.

The Living Pā is starting to take shape.
The first timber column was lifted into place this week; the first of many elements that make up the timber superstructure.
At 9 cubic meters, the LVL column is a 1500x1200T, has 1088 screws in it and is one piece of the carbon sequestering puzzle.
An exceptional team effort by all involved.
