Talk about texture!
This is a selection of fun work from some of our recent beginners classes!
It's always amazing seeing how much texture can be put into your jewelry.
From Roll printed to hammered to stamped... Your creativity shines!
Cutttlefish casting is a low tech, organic method of casting simple forms in metal using the dried cuttlefish 'shell'. The natural texture of the chalky cuttlefish leaves stunning patterns on the cast metal.
Some makers like to use the prices as just another way to cast, and file away this dense texture. We prefer to celebrate it. It reminds us of where the cuttlefish come from, which is a beautiful serendipity... Respecting the materials and their source.
To us it suggests the sand after water has receded and the texture of water ruffled by the wind.
Earlier in August we held a fab day of cuttlefish casting up in our Ōtaki beach studio with some beautiful results!
Great things are happening in our littlest workshop! Ōtaki beach students came to the end of their latest 4wk block. Many of our students are working on longer term projects, and use each block as a way to grow their making skills. From chain making to stone setting they're making fabulous things!
Not sure which Workspace class to choose? We have something for everybody! Check out this guide on the skills and methods we cover, we also have options for distance learners. For further details and to make a booking, head over to our website 🌐

Some yummy stones will be available in our workshops soon! What would you make with this one?
Winter's a great time to be learning casting techniques! Here some of our Ōtaki students are learning to season the crucible before setting up for melting silver.
Seasoning a crucible with borax means that the metal won't stick to the ceramic and the sliver is cleaned by the borax as it melts.
How cute are these Mum & daughter rings from one of our keen jewellery students in Ōtaki?
These rings are textured sterling silver with little oval links of contrasting recycled gold on one and brass on the other. The links can slide around the rings creating a fun fidget ring that's also quite glam! ⭐❤️
