Fulbright NZ Graduate Awardees Sidney Wong, Felicity Powell, Jackson Cate, and Chelsea Wong, recently caught up and took in the sights of Washington D.C.

While they were there, they also attended the 2024 Ian Axford Alumni event at the New Zealand Embassy--see last week's post for more on that.

Thanks so much to Sidney for sending us these fabulous pictures. So nice to see our NZ Fulbrighters connecting up in the US.

Sidney's Fulbright NZ Science and Innovation Graduate award has taken him to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he will be researching automatic hate speech detection on social media.

This week, we celebrate the taonga that is te reo Māori. And in that spirit, we’d like to highlight the work of 2024 Fulbright-Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Scholar Award recipient, Hona Black.

Hona, a Senior Lecturer at Te Pūtahi-a-Toi: The School of Māori Knowledge, will soon depart for the University of Hawai’i, where he will explore language interference with te reo Māori and the Hawaiian language.

Hona says language interference has always been an issue with te reo, and he has always thought it would be interesting to explore it with similar languages, such as the Hawaiian language. His award will give him the opportunity to establish relationships with experts from Hawai’i as well as to share knowledge and experiences between the two languages.

The Fulbright-Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Scholar Award is for a New Zealand academic, artist or professional to lecture and/or conduct research at a US institution in the field of Indigenous development. One award valued at up to US$37,500 is granted each year, towards three to five months of lecturing and/or research. Applications close on 1 October – don't miss out!

Ian Axford Fellowship Alumni were generously hosted at the New Zealand Embassy in Washington D.C. last week. The event coincided with interviews for next year's fellows.

They were joined by key friends of both the Axford programme and Fulbright New Zealand, along with a number of current Fulbright grantees—travelling from as far as California! As you can see from these photos, a wonderful evening was had by all.

Jason Ingham's Fulbright NZ Scholar Award has taken him to the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, where he is researching heritage and sacred architecture, with a focus on vulnerability assessment and remediation.

Recently, Jason (standing middle) travelled to Indianapolis to meet with the team from Sacred Places Indiana. Jason and his hosts will be running two research projects to support Sacred Places Indiana. The first being to develop a catalogue of heritage churches in Indiana, including a detailed study of structural condition. And the second to design a form that allows church groups to request funding from Sacred Places Indiana for building remediation. In the US an historic building is defined as one that is more than 50 years old, but Jason's initial focus will be pre-Word War 2.

More information about Sacred Places Indiana is available here: https://www.indianalandmarks.org/our-work/sacred-places-indiana/

It is always so inspiring to see our Fulbrighters out and about in the field, and a pleasure to showcase their incredible range of interests and pursuits.

Isabel Kelly's Fulbright Science and Innovation Graduate Award has taken her to Harvard University, where she will complete a Master in Public Policy specializing in climate change policy.

Recently Isabel found time to take a trip to Tennessee, visiting Dollywood, Nashville and Memphis. It ended up being a mini music tour of the US, taking in the Country Music Hall of Fame, National Museum of African American Music, Sun Studio (where Elvis caught his break), Beale Street’s blues bars, and Nashville’s H***y Tonk Highway.

By the look of these colourful pics, it must have been a great trip!

2023 Fulbright New Zealand Scholar Siautu Alefaio-Tugia shared with us some photos from her time in Hawai’i.

Siautu is researching Pacific-Indigenous and urban diasporic resilience across disaster and humanitarian contexts, at the National Disaster Preparedness Training Centre (NDPTC) University of Hawai’i.

“It’s been an amazing experience, and what a time to be here in Hawaii. I've been able to attend the National Conference on Race & Ethnicity in Higher Education conference, and right after that it was the Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture, and then American Samoa Heritage Week. I have met so many new colleagues and have accepted the special invitation to speak in Maui, in the lead up to Lahainaʻs [town on the island of Maui, Hawai’I] one-year anniversary."

Thank you for the photos Siautu! 👏

Our Programme Managers Lauren and Paul recently visited Seoul to connect with Fulbright Korea. Alongside their colleagues from across the East Asia Pacific region, they discussed best practices in supporting US Graduates.

But it wasn’t all work!
Paul and Lauren visited temples, ate delicious food and even went to the theatre.
Both Progamme Managers are thrilled to have finally met so many colleagues in person and they look forward to applying their new learning.
Thank you, Fulbright Korea, for hosting Lauren and Paul!
