2024 Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) Baguio: Empowering Women of Barangay Happy Hallow

Today, September 26, 2024, American Corner Baguio and SLU AWE Team had the privilege of meeting 35 incredible women from Barangay Happy Hallow for a brief orientation about the 2024 AWE program. These women, mostly non-working mothers between the ages of 25-45 from the Ibaloi Tribe, are eager and excited to learn how AWE can help enhance their skills and improve their small businesses—or even help them start their own!

Based on a needs assessment conducted by the Community Extension and Outreach Programs, it was clear that livelihood support is essential for the sustainability of their community. We're excited to journey alongside these amazing women and support them as they work toward brighter futures!

The year 2024 heralds a resurgence of a cherished tradition. The U.S. Embassy is getting back on track with its American Corner visits, a series of events that foster cultural exchange and mutual understanding. The first visit of the year, slated for January 29, 2024 at American Corner Baguio, located within the prestigious Saint Louis University.

Leading the visit is Public Affairs Counselor John Groch, who is joined by Kevin Punzalan, the AmSpaces program specialist, and Monina Valdez.

For John, this visit holds a special significance as it marks his first-ever journey to American Corner Baguio.

The visit's agenda is packed with engaging activities and meaningful discussions. John meets Dr. Felina Espique, Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The U.S. Embassy team proposed an exciting idea - the scheduling of organized tours to the Ambassador's Baguio Residence. The team explains that this historic residence will be open to partners for small group educational tours, an initiative aimed at fostering closer ties and promoting cultural exchange.

John and his team meticulously lay out the administrative and logistical arrangements for these future tours. They assure the American Corner Baguio that these tours can be counted as part of its monthly program, further enriching its offerings.

After the fruitful discussion with Dr. Espique, the spotlight shifts to a roundtable discussion. The discussion is centered on the theme 'MLK in YOUth: A Conversation on Martin Luther King Jr's Legacy and Leadership'. The audience is composed of 12 Louisian student leaders, eager to delve into this enlightening topic.

Our speaker, John Groch, is expertly guided through the discussion by the moderator, Dr. Stephenie O. Busbus, the Chair of the Institutional Reputation and Effectiveness Committee of Saint Louis University and the Graduate Program Coordinator for the Teacher Education Programs – School of Advanced Studies.

The discussion unfolds, exploring the significance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s contributions to U.S. history, the reflection of MLK’s values in U.S. public diplomacy efforts in the Philippines, and advice for emerging leaders who aspire to make a difference in their community, keeping MLK’s legacy in mind.

This visit to the American Corner Baguio, the first of many, signifies a promising start to a year of renewed connections and shared experiences, a testament to the enduring bond between the U.S. Embassy and its partners.
