Defending Democracy: National Press Freedom Day ✍️
Today, on National Press Freedom Day, we acknowledge the crucial role a free press plays in safeguarding democracy and human rights. According to official UNESCO figures, 117 journalists were killed in the country in the last 30 years, of which 81 cases remain unsolved.
Journalists and even individuals who are human rights defenders, social justice advocates, and other critics of state policies has been unfairly tagged as supports, recruiters, or members of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA), increasing the risk in human rights.
Following the urge of UNHR experts and advocates, we also highly urge authorities to publicly denounce red-tagging practices and hold officials accountable for any violations.
