Celebrating 15 years of Filipino craftsmanship and conservation MaArte is celebrating 15 years of showcasing Filipino craftsmanship and creativity with the 2024 Fab Finds edition.
According to Danny Jacinto, Museum Foundation of the Philippines President and MaArte Committee Chair, many of the fair’s exhibitors this year, like Joey De Castro of his namesake pottery brand, are not only artists and designers, but are also mentors of Philippine heritage crafts making sure that these are passed on to succeeding generations.
“This year is all about discovering Fab Finds with a purpose to be bearers of modernity and history,” stated Jacinto. “More than bringing home beautiful and high-quality pieces, shoppers own badges of pride in sharing the awareness on heritage conservation, especially our endangered animals.”

Atty. Mark Evidente shared, “Settings involve the immediate and extended environment that contributes to the significance of a site.”
He added, “The law might not have properly discussed it before, but now in the new implementing rules, an argument can be made for settings. It allows us to introduce the arguments from technical experts when we argue why the setting of a particular site is important.”

Ar. Paulo Alcazaren, Landscape Architect and Urban Planner, shared his involvement in the redevelopment of Iloilo Esplanade and Pasig Esplanade on “A Tale of Two Rivers” talk last May 18, 2024.
He said, “It’s a mindset that we have to change and we have to renew our ties with the water. Historically, historical geography, food geography, and history - we have to rediscover all of this to understand and appreciate. We have to look at the natural processes that affect us now. It’s been so hot nowadays. It’s not just bringing back nice esplanades so you can jog but it is also reconnecting ourselves to our cultural and historic roots.”

On “Conserving Modern Heritage” talk last May 11 at the National Museum Auditorium, Dr. Gerard Lico emphasized, “Not all buildings of the past can be conserved. There should be a balance between the sentimental and practical.”
He added, “The goal of good conservation is that there should be a minimum intervention into the historic fabric of a structure. This means that elements should be repaired rather than replaced.”

During the “Sacred Spaces: Repaint, Overpaint or Restore” talk last May 4, Tats Manahan mentioned that investigating wall paintings can be quite challenging.
She stated, “Because there are no records, you have to work with what is there. What if that’s no longer the original? That’s what we’re always faced with. You have to look into archives to find the original or work on whatever is there without changing it. But note in your documentation, that this is suspected to be a recreation of the original and because nothing of the original exists, it’s restored according to what was there. So, at least, you have a historical record of what happened and whoever comes after you will know that what you restored is not the original.”
