ADB's Susann Roth emphasized the importance of adopting a forward-thinking approach by embracing and to prepare organizations for the future. She shared how ADB started its futures thinking journey and incorporated it into the KM program at the Knowledge Organization (IKO) Conference on 14 September in Singapore.
1. Building Futures Thinking Capabilities: Organizations should focus on developing the ability to think critically and strategically about future scenarios. This involves fostering a culture of innovation and foresight within the organization.
2. Conversations About the Future: Engaging in discussions and dialogues about the future with clients is essential. This helps organizations understand emerging trends, challenges, and opportunities, and align their strategies accordingly.
3. Integration of Technology, Data, and People: To make informed decisions with agility, organizations should integrate technology, data, and human expertise with each other. This fusion of resources will enhance and speed up decision-making processes while effectively bringing knowledge to understand all dimensions of risks (financial, climate, social, political etc.) that come from future uncertainties. This enables quick adaptation to changing circumstances.
4. Embracing Excitement, Imagination, and Courage: To navigate the uncertainties of the future, organizations need to cultivate a mindset that embraces excitement, imagination, and courage. This fosters innovation, experimentation, and a willingness to take calculated risks.

Former White House Advisor and Harvard Professor Cass Sunstein shed light on how social change happens and how ADB can accelerate social change as part of the New Operating Model, looking at behavioral economics, psychology, and other fields at the Innovation Speakers' Series: “How Change Happens” featuring Cass Sunstein. He presented four crucial factors that explained why certain social movements can surprise us and disrupt societal structures: preference falsification, diverse thresholds, interdependencies, and group polarization.
Preference falsification is the act of hiding true preferences to conform to social norms, diverse thresholds refer to the tipping point for behavior adoption, interdependencies are the relationships and influences among group members, and group polarization is the tendency for groups to adopt more extreme positions than individual members.
