Happy Birthday, Pepe!

Today, we commemorate the 163rd birth anniversary of Dr. José Rizal, a national hero whose enduring legacy is profoundly embedded in the fabric of Philippine history. Dr. Rizal's seminal works, "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo", stand as monumental critiques of Spanish colonial rule, igniting the flames of the nationalist movement that ultimately led to the country's struggle for independence.

As a child, José Rizal's innocence was gradually tainted by the harsh and oppressive realities of his environment. Little did he know that these experiences would shape him into a pivotal figure in the fight for national liberation. His writings, which unveiled the brutalities of colonialism, were instrumental in mobilizing the Filipino people towards the cause of freedom. Rizal's love for his country, akin to his love for family and friends, grew from a deep-seated sense of justice and empathy.

Dr. José Rizal said, "Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan" which in his belief that the innocence and uncorrupted ideals of the youth, when confronted with injustice, can ignite a transformative and progressive movement towards a freer Philippines. His life and works continue to inspire future generations to strive for a just and equitable society.

Today, we honor and celebrate the sacrifices, hardships, and unwavering support of our fathers and father figures, who stand as our "Haligi ng tahanan".

As we express our gratitude, let's also remember the importance of acceptance and understanding within our families. It is crucial that we do not tolerate fathers like Jesse, who impose pressure and remain ignorant of their children's Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE). Despite their children's efforts to be acknowledged and accepted, Jesse's lack of understanding represses the emotions of a child.

On this special day, let's commit to fostering love, acceptance, and open-mindedness in our homes. Every child deserves to feel valued and respected by their fathers and families.

This Pride Month, Teatro Rizal cherishes the freedom to be ourselves and love who we want. Embracing all forms of freedom: to love, express, and pursue dreams without facing threats and violence.

Theatre has become a medium to showcase the struggles of the people. Teatro Rizal's highlights the diverse struggles and triumphs of the LGBTQIA+ community, calling for the urgent need to pass the long-debated SOGIE Bill. We continue this call, as our love of independence are all one within the people who along fights with it.
