Kaisa Para Sa Kaunlaran (菲律濱華裔青年聯合会 Unity for Progress) 1987.
Kaisa Para Sa Kaunlaran started on 28 August 1987, during the time when one of the bloodiest coups was being staged in the metropolis. It was a baptism of fire. Democracy has just been restored, and young Chinese Filipinos (Kaisa founders), felt it was a good time to launch a new organization. The logo shows two hands clasped together with one heart beating for our country and pushing the wheel of progress.

Statement of Teresita Ang See on the Aug 2 Binondo tragic fire
Friday, August 2, 2024 was a tragic day for the Tsinoy community. 11 persons, some of them just starting their career, lost their lives due to gas leak in the building where they were boarders.
We commiserate with the families of the victims and express our deepest sympathy. More than the tragic event, more depressing and wretched was how insensitive some people were for circulating the photograph of the gruesome tragedy. Even worse and more depressing was how some media outfit, who should have known better, violated the code of ethical journalism by putting the same photo in the front page above the fold.
Let me share these reminders, culled from the Code of Ethics for Journalists, so that media practitioners and owners know what rules they violated:
KBP Broadcast Code (Philippines):
Article 6 Sec 11: A coverage should avoid inflicting undue shock or [and] pain to families and loved ones of victims of crimes, crisis situations, or of disasters, accidents, and other tragedies. (S)
Sec. 13. Images that are gruesome, revolting, shocking, obscene, scandalous, or extremely disturbing or offensive, shall not be shown or described in graphic detail. When such images suddenly occur during a coverage, the station shall cut them off the air. (G)
Article 7 Sec. 2: Persons affected by tragedy or grief shall be treated with sensitivity, respect and discretion; they should be allowed to suffer their grief in private.
https://kbp.org.ph/downloads/broadcast-code
SPJ code of ethics (global, most widely used):
Minimize Harm: Ethical journalism treats sources, subjects, colleagues and members of the public as human beings deserving of respect. Balance the public’s need for information against potential harm or discomfort. Pursuit of the news is not a license for arrogance or undue intrusiveness. Show compassion for those who may be affected by news coverage. Use heightened sensitivity when dealing with juveniles, victims of s*x crimes, and sources or subjects who are inexperienced or unable to give consent. Consider cultural differences in approach and treatment. Avoid pandering to lurid curiosity, even if others do.
https://www.spj.org/ethicscode.asp
NPPA code of ethics (global):
4. Treat all subjects with respect and dignity. Give special consideration to vulnerable subjects and compassion to victims of crime or tragedy. Intrude on private moments of grief only when the public has an overriding and justifiable need to see. https://nppa.org/resources/code-ethics
P*P code of ethics (Philippines):
4. I shall treat all subjects with respect and dignity. I shall presume persons accused of crime of being innocent until proven otherwise. I shall avoid intruding on private moments of grief, crime or tragedy. https://www.pcp.ph/pcp-code-of-ethics
NUJP Ethical Guide for Filipino Journalists:
Photojournalists and camera operators shall treat news subjects with respect and dignity. Photojournalists and camera operators must take a respectful distance and avoid swarming around news subjects who are dealing with grief or tragedy, especially victims of crime. Newsrooms must encourage their staff to produce reports that focus not only on tragedy or misery but other facets of the disaster, such as individual acts of bravery
or heroism, coping mechanisms within a community, the extent of the damage, the costs of rehabilitation, the impact on marginalized sectors, the role of civic organizations and local governments, and, most importantly, what the national government has or has not been doing.

Ugly Face of Sinophobia and Racism
(Statement of Teresita Ang See, Founding Chair, Movement for Restoration of Peace and Order
Founding President, Kaisa Para Sa Kaunlaran.
This was read at April 20, 2024 "Pandesal Forum" at Kamuning Bakery Cafe in Quezon City)
The past days’ preoccupation with deliberate fanning of Sinophobia and racism by politicians and media spreading baseless whodunits of “students as spies” is dangerous and unfortunate.
Politicians, opinion makers, our military, and police scramble to ride on the issue without checking the facts. Even our Commission on Higher Education, says there is a “significant number” of Chinese students at St. Paul University in Tuguegarao without qualifying what is significant relative to the total student population or giving context that it is the only university given authority by CHED and Bureau of Immigration to accept foreign students. The number of foreign students (of all nationalities) in St. Paul University is 486, far from the 4,600 reported.
Neighboring countries take measures to entice Chinese tourists and Chinese students who wish to improve their English to better qualify for higher studies outside China. We, on the other hand, discourage them from coming by exhibiting blatant racism and racial profiling.
The baseless and deliberate fanning of negative news on “influx of Chinese students” serves only to exacerbate the ongoing geopolitical tensions arising from our maritime conflict with China. It is not a coincidence that it came on the heels of the tripartite summit among the United States, Japan and the Philippines and the Balikatan exercises being undertaken supposedly to make our military better equipped and combat ready. It is not a coincidence either that the EDCA (Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement) sites are in Cagayan and our militaary has been agitating for greater logistical support from the U.S. and a bigger budget from our government for these sites. It is also not a coincidence that the protagonists in the Cagayan students story are political rivals.
Those who forget history are bound to repeat mistakes of the past.
We are allowing ourselves to be drawn into a proxy war between China and the United States. We do not see the Americans giving diplomacy a chance to calm turbulent waters and give room for dialogue and peaceful engagement. Tensions have been deliberately escalated and magnified by the delivery and installation of mid-range capability missiles in the Philippines by the United States. Negative news like the exaggerated influx of Chinese students are further churning the waters into a potentially dangerous tsunami.
As the statement of the four Cagayan Province private universities said: "the insinuation that the presence of Chinese students in the City's Universities poses a threat to national security is not only baseless but is also deeply offensive. It is a blatant display of racism and Sinophobia that has no place in our society, especially within the realm of education." Truly, conflating geopolitical tensions with racism and Sinophobia has no part in our civilized Christian society.
We are extremely sad to announce the passing of our former board member David Hwang, January 25, 2024.
David is best remembered for his cooking skills. He conducted a couple of cooking demonstrations in Kaisa.
Details of his wake to follow.
Please pray for David's eternal repose. Rest in peace. 🙏
