Manaoag Medical Mission: 1999 and Beyond
By Ryan Jeremiah D. Quan

For members of the Uno High School Alumni Association, Inc. (UHSAAI), September is a month to look forward to. Medical missions are customary in the calendar of activities of UHSAAI, but the most anticipated is undoubtedly the annual medical-dental mission held in Manaoag, Pangasinan. It has been eight years since the first mission in Manaoag was held in September 1999 and much has changed. Surely, it would not be amiss to look back to how it all started.

This worthwhile endeavor started with a most noble intention of past president (PP) Robert Quan and his spouse, the late Juliet Donato-Quan. In 1999, PP Robert and "the only lady" Juliet were already devotees of the miraculous Lady of Manaoag. They went on their usual monthly trips to Pangasinan to hear mass when they thought of holding a medical-dental mission in the parish. They then proceeded to the parish office and had a small chat with the parish priest, inquiring about the possibility of holding a mission there. The parish priest gladly accommodated their request.

The task of organizing a team for a medical-dental mission is not something new for the couple. Yet, forming one and bringing it all the way up north to Manaoag seemed daunting, but that didn't stop them from pursuing the project. The couple, being devotees of Our Lady of Manaoag, chose to hold the mission on the month of September, specifically on the 5th. That day was nearest to September 8, during which the nativity of the Blessed Virgin is being celebrated. Despite doing most of the legwork for the mission, the Quan spouses did not want their names plastered on big streamers and posters as sponsors of the mission. When asked, PP Robert was quick to say that one need not ask for recognition if his real intention is to help. At this juncture, the couple invited UHSAAI, headed by then president Dr. Teresita Lim, and the Valenzuela (United) Lions Club with then president Juliet Quan at the helm to co-sponsor the said mission. Soon after, everything was all set and at dawn of September 5, 1999, the medical and dental teams headed for Manaoag, Pangasinan.

Through the years, the medical-dental mission in Manaoag has evolved. From a number of roughly 600 in 1999, the number of patients being provided free medical check-ups and free tooth extraction has steadily increased every year. Of course, accommodating the increasing number of patients would not be possible if not also for the increasing number of doctors, dentists, generous sponsors and volunteers who have selflessly contributed to the mission.

Truly, the possibilities are endless with the Manaoag mission. Sometime in the early 2000's, volunteer optometrists had joined the mission to provide free consultations. The mission has also included the distribution of free powdered milk for the children in 2004, in order that their health be augmented somehow.

Since 1999, a number of partners have committed to lend a hand in the yearly mission. Worth noting are the volunteer doctors from the Metropolitan Hospital, who through the years have made a significant contribution. These doctors came to know of the mission through the untiring efforts of PP Dr. Judy Lao and spouse Dr. Go Engte, who have been responsible for coordinating with the doctors since the first year of the mission. Earlier, the Valenzuela (United) Lions Club had been providing the dental team for the mission. Of late, the Rotary Club of Valenzuela West and the Rotaract Club of Valenzuela West have been responsible for the increased participation of the dentists for the mission. A number of friends, who prefer to remain anonymous, continue to support the mission through contributions, monetary and otherwise. And of course, hats off for the alumni volunteers (who have doubled in number since 1999) who choose to spend at least one Sunday off to be of service to the community of Manaoag.

Last September 3, 2006, over 1,400 patients were attended to by the medical team under the banner of UHSAAI and friends. President Alexon Yang and EVP Alejandro Wee were all-out in supporting this worthy endeavor.

Eight years had passed and amidst the setbacks and challenges, the Manaoag mission still stands strong. Many alumni look forward to September and each has his or her reason for joining the mission. It may be because of tradition, or a panata, or to travel, or to just see fellow alumni. Whatever the reason may be, the Manaog mission is the embodiment of each of the volunteer’s desire to serve others without expecting anything in return.
