TANGLUYAN โ CELEBRATION OF SUCCESS
From Cindy, our Student Support Program manager: โHow important is it to celebrate students' success? Every year, we encounter different stories. These stories inspire other children and youth to continue believing in education and their dreams. Each success story serves as a beacon of light for those walking along dark paths, bringing hope especially during their toughest times.
Students gave powerful and motivational speeches, including Raphael, Student Leaders President, and Ellyka, Student Leaders Vice President and one of the Most Outstanding YF Students.
Christian, who graduated with the Magna Cum Laude award, also shared an inspiring testimony of his journey as a student. Heโs one of nine children in his family. His story encourages students to strive for greatness despite the situation theyโre in. Most notably, Christian's heartfelt speech about the words 'kaya, kinakaya, kakayanin,' (โpossible, striving to, will be able to') left a lasting impact on how he pursued his dreams and gave his best to reach where he is today.
Even Kuya Paul and Ate Ann delivered a message of congratulations and encouragement from the Netherlands, respecting everyone's effort to achieve their goals.
The event took an unexpected turn when students gave flowers and made a surprise video for the YF teachers and coordinators who guided them through the school year. This is not just the success of parents and students, but also the success of YF staff in seeing them graduate and move up. This magical moment wrapped up the event as everyone sang the theme song โToday My Life Beginsโ.
We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of this event - Charmain Obet of Brgy. 129 for the diligent assistance, Brgy. 128 for the venue, enthusiastic volunteers, inspiring speakers, talented performers, the dedicated SSP team, all of Young Focus, and last but not least, our exceptional students and their supportive families.
A Special Congratulations to Our Awardees! Your achievements reflect your relentless hard work and perseverance. We are incredibly proud of every one of you. This event not only celebrated your past accomplishments but also set the stage for your future successes.
Letโs continue to foster a spirit of excellence and support within our community. Hereโs to more milestones and achievements in the days to come!"
JOHNRYVE'S JOURNEY
The staff of Catch-UP (for out-of-school youth) proudly congratulates former ALS (Alternative Learning Student) student, Johnryve Villanueva. He successfully completed the ALS program, achieved a National Certification II, and has just graduated as a Fitter Machinist from Don Bosco Vocational School.
Johnryve started on his journey with Young Focus in 2021 as an ALS junior high school student. The pandemic, however, forced him to stop attending so he could find a job to support his family. Despite the hurdles, Johnryve's determination never wavered โ balancing work and studies. His ALS teachers supported him by passing on the lesson modules, which he completed and returned. His hard work resulted in a completed presentation portfolio, earning him his well-deserved ALS graduation.
Johnryve then followed the path of vocational education, while also participating in our PostCare program, where he was an inspiration to his peers.
Catch-UP manager, Angelo: โJohnryve's journey is a testament to his perseverance, resilience and leadership. Heโs navigated the challenges of being an out-of-school youth, a breadwinner, a young parent and a dedicated student with grace and determination. We celebrate you, Johnryve, and the bright future youโre carving out for yourself. Weโre so proud of your achievements."
PASSION TO PROFESSION
From Ram, our Career Development Program manager: "On June 12, we celebrated and gathered new Young Professionals (Young Focus alumni/former students) and college/university students who had the best career booth from last year's Career Month. The event was attended by 11 Young Pros (Young Professionals) and 14 students from diverse fields such as engineering, healthcare, technology, education, marketing and more. With the theme 'Passion to Profession', one of our Young Pros, Gerson, a high school teacher and ICT head, shared his story about pursuing passion and furthering his education with a Master's degree. The two main objectives were to encourage everyone to consider passion and purpose as they keep working towards their career goals, and to strengthen connections between Young Pros and soon-to-be graduates, promoting mentoring and networking. After the discussion, we enjoyed the rest of the day, successfully inspiring and connecting participants and paving the way for future collaboration and mentorship."
PRESCHOOL ANNUAL OUTING
Our Child Care PLUS (preschool) staff report on their 2024 educational trip: โCC PLUS students had a fantastic time! Visiting the zoo can be such an enriching experience. Itโs great that they got to explore and appreciate the diversity of wildlife. They also had a great time in Rizal Park's Chinese Garden, which is a peaceful spot for some extra fun and learning. They enjoyed running around and playing with other kids, as well as feeding the fish in the pond. They also enjoyed their lunch and snack. Truly, this was a memorable experience!โ
DREAM BIG FLY HIGH
Our Child Care PLUS program (preschool) celebrated their Moving Up ceremony! After a year of hard work the children can now go up to the next level of their education. The theme was โDream Big, Fly Highโ. Enjoy the pictures of our happy children, as well as the proud mothers and staff. ๐
Many thanks to Intracare, sponsor of Child Care PLUS.
PAGLAUM โ CATCH-UP 7th GRADUATION CEREMONY
Angelo, manager of our Catch-UP program (for out-of-school youth) reports: โEvery journey has its end, but it doesnโt mean itโs over. Instead, itโs the start of a new beginning. The Annual Catch-UP School Year Commencement Exercise had the theme: Paglaum: Paghakbang sa susunod na baitang sa tagumpay (Hope: Taking the next step towards success).
It was an important opportunity for learners who may have fallen behind to catch up and be recognized for their efforts by receiving their diplomas and certificates. The second chances provided allow learners to be promoted and step into the next chapter as they work hard to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
A former beneficiary and coordinator shared his hindrances and struggles during his education. He emphasized that there is always hope and that you must hold on to it to overcome challenges and move toward the next step in life. Some of our partners and sponsors joined the celebration of the learners' success.โ
BIDABestKid
From Cindy, our Student Support Program manager: โAs the school year 2023-2024 came to an end, the elementary students had a special event where they performed and celebrated their abilities such as speech choir, singing and playing ukulele, dancing, role playing, visual arts, and many more. โBIDAโ, which means being a star or outstanding, describes the Young Focus kids. Their performances demonstrated that each one of them excels and stands out in their unique abilities.
An event like this honors the many different skills of the students, emphasizing the importance of nurturing a wide range of talents. We want to encourage them to pursue their academic excellence, passions, and continue developing their skills beyond the classroom.
Thank you so much to the YF staff and YF students (High school-College) for guiding and sharing your skills with the kids; to the parents, for your unwavering support and encouragement; and to these young kids, for your enthusiasm and hard work. As we look forward to the next school year, we remain committed to fostering an environment where each studentโs talents can flourish.โ
ALTERNATIVE LEARNING SYSTEM (ALS) โ 51st GRADUATION CEREMONY
From Angelo, manager of our Catch-UP program (for school dropouts): โThe ALS 51st graduation ceremony at Timoteo Paez Integrated School was a resounding success, celebrating the hard-earned achievements of the learners. It was a day filled with pride, joy and inspiration, reinforcing the belief that education can transform lives and provide hope for a brighter future. The dedication of the Young Focus team, the support from family members and the resilience of the students made this achievement a truly unforgettable experience.
The Young Focus Catch-UP program congratulates a total of 84 graduates, from both Junior High School and Elementary levels. During the event, the learners received the documents they need to start a new chapter in their formal schooling, responding to the theme of the graduation, โKabataang Pilipino para sa Matatag na Kinabukasan ng Bagong Pilipinas (Youth of the Philippines for a Strong Future of the New Philippines).โ
CREATIVE COMPUTER SKILLS TRAINING
From Cindy, our Student Support Program manager: โThe Grade 9 students had an amazing experience learning design fundamentals and creating posters in Canva with the help of UPCAP [University of the Philippines Career Assistance Program]! This hands-on experience was invaluable in boosting their creativity. It was also the first time our newly renovated computer room, which can now accommodate 30 students, was used. We're looking forward to more computer skills training sessionsโฆ and more system units are coming!โ
THANK YOU UP Career Assistance Program!
HeART: Talent Exposure Concert
From Gelo, the manager of our Catch-UP programs (for out-of-school youth): โThe Alternative Learning System (ALS) Junior High School students showcased their talents by producing a concert for Mother's Day. The event featured students playing music, singing songs, acting, and dancing to entertain parents invited from the Family Care program.
The students demonstrated their dedication to making this event a success. They participated in various workshops and training sessions to improve their skills and talents. Teachers invited trainers to teach students musical instruments, dancers to make their dances more engaging, and an acting coach to help them improve their confidence while performing.
At the end of the day, both students and the audience enjoyed the performances.โ
NYTLYF LAUNCHED IN NAIC
From Marian, manager of our center in Naic, Cavite: โOn May 11, 2024, Young Focus Naic held its soft opening activity for NytlYF (a creative development program) through the initiative of the first batch of student leaders. Students from Grades 7 to college indulged in an animated movie and met in small groups to share their insights after watching.
A wild surprise also popped up in the middle of the event when Ate Rose Ann (College Coordinator in Manila) and Kuya Ram (Career Development Manager) called to catch up via video. They gave an impromptu speech of encouragement for the students.
Aubrey, the Student Council President in Naic, quipped, โIt was a night to remember! It was my first time as a student leader, and I was scared and unsure if I could pull it off, but I remembered that we are a team. We are excited to do more for the students in the coming weeks. We'd like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who joined and cheered us on.โโ
WOW! TRANSFORMATION COMPLETED!
The Young Focus lobby, a small classroom, and a larger classroom, as well as a computer room, have all been thoroughly restyled and upgraded in a month's time. This remarkable transformation is the result of the hard work and support of Mapua interior design students, their contractor, and the sponsorship of various companies and individuals. It's truly impressive what has been achieved. Congratulations to all involved!!! Check out the pictures...

DISASTER TRAINING
From Cindy, our Student Support Program manager: "Thereโs a lot in the news about fire incidents, since the extreme heat of this summer started. In the area of Tondo, where most houses are built very close together and made of light materials, itโs important to discuss the disasters and hazards that might be encountered. To prevent and prepare for various types of disasters, Young Focus students underwent earthquake and fire drills. They also received training in First Aid, such as bandaging."
RENOVATION PROJECT UPDATE
The Interior Design students from Mapua University will soon be completing their renovation project with us. Hereโs their latest message:

NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES
From JM, our NytlYF coordinator: "They say "not all heroes wear capes," which is true enough because some wear casual clothes while doing amazing deeds for others. The NytlYF event entitled: โIkaw ang Bida sa NytlYF,โ [โYou Are a NytlYF Heroโ] recognizes the studentsโ powerful abilities and, if they havenโt discovered them yet, the NytlYF program is the best place to explore and find their hidden talents. They may have different abilities, but each of the students is unique in their own way.
Ram, as the speaker, gave a short message about the importance of knowing one's self and honing skills, giving examples of the abilities of different superheroes and reminding the NytlYFers that they also have their own fact-based skills, not just fictional ones like the superheroes on television.
The new set of student leaders for the years 2024โ2026 were also formally introduced. These brave students step forward to take on leadership roles in NytlYF and to be the student representatives of Young Focus.
The event ended by recognizing the winners who dressed up as their favorite superheroes."

LATELY @ NAIC
From Marian, our Naic Center manager: "Young Focus Naic greeted summer with various activities. Our high school and college students received valuable information on how they can become better decision makers and critical thinkers. The life skills sessions involved real-life scenarios where they applied the concepts they learned.
Our elementary students are revving up their reading and comprehension skills in Filipino through WiKAHON, a collection of readings and exercises for language learning at different levels.
The senior high and college students have started stepping up and leading the younger students by teaching them Math lessons and planning activities for 'NytlYF' (a creativity/arts program to develop talents and leadership skills). The students are looking forward to participating in the different clubs."
INTERVIEWS & GRADUATION PHOTOS AT THE CATCH-UP CENTER
From Angelo, manager of our Catch-UP programs for out-of-school youth: "On a busy Saturday at the Catch-up Center, where simultaneous activities occur, one main event was the Alternative Learning System (ALS) revalida. This activity reassesses the competency of learners through individual interviews, reading, writing, and reasoning. A total of 85 students (35 elementary and 50 junior high school students) were assessed by DepEd Education Program Specialist II (EPS II) to be accredited as passers for this year's presentation portfolio assessments.
Additionally, Catch-UP began preparations for the annual graduation. An estimated 150 learners will be promoted and moved to the next level this year. To provide a memorable experience for them, the staff team prepared a graduation pictorial. The students exhibited wonderful smiles, experiencing the results of all their hard work."
PRESCHOOL UPDATE
At the moment we have two preschool (Child Care PLUS) sessions a day with a total of 60 children: 43 in the โnurseryโ section and 17 in โjunior kinderโ. โJunior kinderโ will move up to Kindergarten after this school year. The โnurseryโ group will move up to โjunior kinderโ.
Starting in 2014 we had the preschool in the Vitas community, but the government is now planning to tear down the buildings in Vitas. So, we decided to house this yearโs preschool in our Catch-UP building.
These pictures give an impression of the preschool sessions with our two dedicated teachers working with the children. Thanks to teacher Clarissa and teacher Sarah! ๐
SECRET SERVICE
โThe heart of leadership is based on serving others, not ourselves.โ - John Maxwell
From Cindy, our Student Support Program manager: โ19 students from Manila and Naic, stepped up to take a brave decision to become student leaders of Young Focus. A 3-day camp filled with activities, games, and lessons was prepared for them. With the theme, โSecret Serviceโ, the aspiring leaders learned how they can develop the โLeaderโ within themselves in order to serve other students and make a difference.
Primarily, the student leaders collaborate with the Young Focus coordinators to organize events for NytlYF [a creative evening program for high school and college students]. They also represent the voice of the children and youth of Young Focus to further improve the services we provide, not only in academics but also in their personal growth. We are excited about the upcoming activities as they help build a community of motivated servant leaders, and a hope for the next generation.โ
FIREโS AFTERMATH
In the wake of the fire, residents of the burned houses were evacuated to a nearby basketball court. However, because there were too many families for the evacuation area, some are now camped on the streets, while others have decided to go back to what was left of their homes, despite the danger of the structures collapsing. There are also families staying in our Catch-UP center. With the generous support of donors, weโve been able to start distributing basic items such as food, clothing, hygiene kits and sleeping mats.
Meanwhile, many men have spent days in the burned out buildings dismantling the walls, floors, and pillars, hoping also to earn some income from selling whatโs left of the steel bars. Even little kids are scavenging for nails and bits of iron, at some risk considering the instability of the ruins around them. The men demolishing said they might take a break for Holy Week [Easter] and then go back to leveling the area so they can rebuild their houses and return to their lives.
Major Fire Destroys Many Homes
On Thursday evening, a massive fire struck the slums of Tondo, Manila. In 7 hours, the blaze destroyed approximately 140 houses, partially gutted 60 more, and displaced around 600 families, totaling roughly 1,800 individuals, according to the local Bureau of Fire Protection. Currently, people are living on the streets or in cubicle tents set up on basketball courts. Some of our students and their families are also affected by the fire and its aftermathโฆ
Immediate response from the local government, as well as Young Focus and other NGOs aim to provide food and shelter. Hopefully, soon we can also begin rebuilding homes. We want to extend our help to these people in need and would ask for your participation in that effort.
Please visit www.youngfocus.org/fire and donate so we can support the families affected by the fire as much as possible.
Thank you!
Empowering Fathers
Fathers of Young Focus students learned about how to be BRAVE while discussing the topic, Preventing Family Violence in the Home. One of the meeting's objectives was to discuss anger management as a way to prevent violence in the family, and they discovered a new meaning for the word BRAVE: Breathe, Relax, Assess, Value, and Express.
During the discussion, the fathers expressed their interest in what they were learning, and some of them talked about their personal experiences handling conflict. They also actively participated in a role-playing activity where they demonstrated how their newfound knowledge from the session could make a difference in how they now manage their anger. It was a fun and inspiring session that showed that fathers can be gentle in expressing their emotions and how they can be BRAVE.
Happy International Womenโs Day!!! ๐๐๐
