Lingua Franca literally translated means "Our Language". UP Lingua Franca is a university-wide organization of language and literature in UP Diliman.
We are UP Lingua Franca, a duly recognized socio-academic organization based in the UP College of Arts and Letters (CAL). It is composed of very dedicated and dynamic students whose passion lies in the power of the English language and its use in literary and non-literary compositions, especially by Filipinos. For interested parties for projects or tie-ups, you may reach us at
[email protected]
https://uplinguafranca.wordpress.com
It has been 28 years since the founding of UP Lingua Franca. Since then, the organization has faced challenges to which we responded with strength and courage. One of the greatest challenges was the COVID-19 pandemic which compelled us to suspend our usual on-site activities and conduct alternative online activities.
The release of UPLF's 2024 journal is a momentous achievement because it symbolizes the resurgence of the organization. It has been five years since the last journal, Remembrance, was published. Now, UP Lingua Franca proudly returns with Vita Nuova.
Vita Nuova, meaning โnew lifeโ, perfectly encapsulates the revitalization of our organization as we resume face-to-face classes and on-site activities. Upon our return, we found ourselves forging a renewed path and embracing a new chapter in our lives and the future of UPLF.

UP Lingua Franca turns 28! ๐๐
On this day in 1996, the organization was founded by a group of 25 enthusiasts from the BA English Studies Program whose passion lies in the appreciation of the beauty and power of the English language as it is used in literary and non-literary compositions.
Today, it continues to serve as a haven for language and literature lovers to conduct discussions, express themselves, and form strong bonds of camaraderie that will live long past their college days.
Happy 28th, UPLF! ๐

Unknowingly or not, we sometimes view ourselves through the lens of others. It is how we create identities far from our own depending on the nature and people around us. In the essay "I Know What You Think of Me"by Tim Kreider, the author examines the truth behind our self retrospection based on other peopleโs perception of usโand although itโs a habit that sometimes harbors doubts over oneself, it is also evidence that to live is to be known and to be known is to be lived through others.
The essay also shows how we can both create and derive meaning from the simplest of things around us. It speaks volumes about our capabilities as human beings to think outside of the box and to make sense of our world. A thing as simple as an email serves as a setup for the theme of the story, both by being a tool that the author uses to compare today's information-driven society to previous ones and also by highlighting the fact that we can learn about people's perceptions of us just about anywhere.

In his poetry collection Zero Gravity, Gamalinda writes with the quiet resignment of someone who has fought against and surrendered to the love contained in all things (earthly and divine). As an immigrant, he writes of being grateful to leave Manila, leaving him with both guilt and freedom. It is a feeling often overlooked for most diasporic writers, who more often than not write about missing home. He does not. With this, he writes about the American mundane with a love, deference, and romanticism that only a third-world pair of eyes can. There is a silent cathartic exhalation in having traded humid Manila for the fragrant cold air of New England, soulless though it is.
In contrast to the earthly humdrum of daily life, he frequently employs vibrant, bursting imagery: Catholicism, the terror of angels, Andalusia, and Lorca. The mundanity and vibrance complement each other, seamlessly woven without tension by the thread of the human condition--to love, to leave, to yearn, to suffer. An astounding collection of poetry, every single one ruthlessly beautiful.

A poem about love and loss, Neruda does not beat around the bush as he offers a reflective counter-providence as advise for people who speak the same ordeal as he does: if they do not love you, do not love them either; if they look for you, do not allow yourself to be found--for you have forgotten them, as they have forgotten you. However, love is a concept unknown to people who knows it very well. Once love sweetly blossoms yet again, do you welcome it with wide open arms or do you turn your back against the bittersweet past and forget it forevermore?
Neruda does not offer one but two answers--these are yours to choose.

Letโs delve into the short story entitled Gilt-Edged Shadows, a piece about oneโs transition to fatherhood and experimentation with digital photography as a film photographer.
Catherine Rose Torresโ โGilt-Edged Shadowsโ is a short story that narrates the lives of Marco and Yvonne, a couple expecting their first child. Marco also works as a struggling photographer, caught between the nostalgia and experience of his film camera, and the ever-evolving landscape around him shifting to digital cameras. This struggle eventually gets to him, with him being forced to buy a digital camera in order to score a job and continue providing for his family. This is evidently the least of his problems, however, as the job that he does end up landing requires that he be separated from his wife and unborn child and fly to Cambodia, leading to more problems than solutions. Eventually however, Marco ends up solving these problems and becoming more confident in himself and his identity.
The story, using the two factors namely the birth of his daughter and the transition to digital photography, has been effective in showing the visualization of horror and wariness towards the changes in oneโs life. Other features that showcased the subtle narration and progression of the plot are the uses of Hindu and Buddhism mythology and the womenโs bodies (stoneheads, his wife Yvonne, and the unnamed model in his grandfatherโs n**e image) to indicate Marcoโs gradual acceptance of fatherhood and rejection of digital photography. The story, intentional or not, also expresses a manโs neglect of his wifeโs opinion on a life-changing decision, which had been Marcoโs sudden decision to buy a digital camera and accept a commission outside the country despite their tight budget due to Yvonneโs pregnancy. As implied by the title itself, Gilt-Edged Shadows weaponises sharp subtlety and well-thought allusions to delineate a manโs hesitant steps towards fatherhood while his wife suffers the repercussions of pregnancy and labor.
All-in-all, Gilt-Edged Shadows is a short story that uses both the divine and more literal ways of portraying the various struggles of an individual in their everyday life, exploring the intricacies and the harsh realities that come with being human.

Happy LFridays!๐๐
As we celebrate National Womenโs Month this March, let us keep looking at certain womenโs issues that our fellow Filipino women have faced. For this LFridays post, we will look specifically at notions of the beautiful as a womenโs issue.
Back in 1935, Filipina poet Trinidad Tarrosa-Subido released her poem โVanityโ, which essentially conveys the personaโs colonized mentality. The poem begins with a deification: โWe call her Foreign Woman, Godโฆโ. What follows this is a painting of the foreign woman, whom the persona describes as possessed of hair glistening with โburnished copper dustโ, a face as โwhite as the tropic skyโ, โsea-blueโ eyes, and a smile as bright as the โsilver of a levant starโ. The colors that the persona selects for the foreign woman are vibrant and create a pleasant image. Likewise, the use of light and bright imagery is relevant to deification as icons and images of the Christian God and saints, whom Filipinos venerate, often appear enveloped by a brilliant light.
In contrast with the foreigner, however, the persona uses dull descriptive phrases to paint the Filipino woman: โMy eyes are dark and, too, my hair; / And brown the flesh that shrouds my soulโ. On a logical level, the descriptions that the persona provides accurately depict a Filipino woman, but they are delivered in an unimaginative fashion. Unlike the first stanza, the persona does not compare Filipino beauty with nature and the heavenly bodies, whose beauty are exceptional. Thus, the stark difference between the images of the two nationalities suggests a preference for the foreign. The suggestion is made explicit in the last two lines of the poem, revealing the culmination of the personaโs colonized mentality as she seeks rebirth endowing her with foreign qualities: โO, Lord Creator, make me too / A foreign woman to my native landโ.
Overall, Tarrosa-Subidoโs โVanityโ follows the voice of a Filipino woman who was made to feel insecure and inferior when placed adjacent to the colonizer. More than the regard for foreign beauty, the poem maintains that, in matters of magnificence, the native would always come second to the colonizer.
Why are people so invested in womenโs culture even though they are produced by capitalist artists? And how do we analyze womenโs particular entrapment within the system, as opposed to entrapments of other cultural minorities? This International Womenโs Day, we learn from the cultural theorist Lauren Berlant! โจ
We recommend Berlantโs essay, โThe Female Complaintโ (link below). This influential essay came out in 1988, just weeks before the other great work by Judith Butler.
Here is our short review of the essay:
Other feminist theorists go right out and strategize ways to break down the system, but Berlantโs first move is to analyze peopleโs affective investments within such system, which in turn are the ones also contributing to its longevity. This was a novel move against the conventional scholarship alienated from peopleโs experiences, and provides a most probable reason why social change we aspire is hard to get. While the case studies in such essay are from American womenโs culture, Berlantโs theoretical approach is indispensable for full analysis of modern sexual politics.
For as opposed to other regimes of power, patriarchy creates the very situation it imagines. Women become trapped within their fulfilments of social roles. Many are fated to follow the life of motherhood and child-rearing which they โcomplainโ against. In analyzing โcomplaintsโ by conservative women on being mothers, Berlant traces their ironies to the difficulty of female public sphere, precisely because patriarchal forms like the family inevitably contain their voices and attachments. Forgive us for quoting this Berlant sentence in full: โSituated precisely in the space between a sexual politics that threatens structures of patriarchal authority and a sentimentality that confirms the inevitability of the speaker's powerlessness, the female complaint registers the speaker's frustration, rage, abjection, and heroic self-sacrifice, in an oppositional utterance that declares its limits in its very saying.โ
The answer, for Berlant, lies not in shunning away female artists of whatever stripe who take up space, but on continuing to engage in the real politics of the public sphere previously afforded to men. Feminism should be โa collection of local and specific guerilla actions addressed to particular problems and dedicated to making the public sphere safe for women,โ and in the Philippines, this means engagement with economic, racial, and religious discourse as well. For if we cannot erase the entrenchment of womenโs culture which create a seemingly singular female identity, we can at least create other forms of identifications. We are thinking of organizations like Amihan and Gabriela, which create solidarities through clear-eyed view of our shared histories of oppression.
This is the gist of the essay, but it has so much more to offer. In fact, Berlant wrote a full-length book inspired by their model of โthe female complaint.โ ๐
Be careful and watch your back; the bed bugs might just bite! ๐๐ง This weekโs LFridays features the Irish author, Sheridan Le Fanu, who takes us back to the 19th century horror of a vampire lurking within the shadows of Styria in the book Carmilla.
Here is a short review of the book:
The words were easy to understand while keeping you entertained andโat timesโat the edge of your seat. It wastes no time to deliver what it is intended to deliver and gives its readers a vivid illustration of a milieu when a vampire reigns terror in the shadows of the night. The story compels its readers to think and feel about the dread of wandering through dark alleys or open-space roads illuminated only by the light of the full moon. The most descriptive parts in the story was when Laura was describing Carmilla and the nightmare/s she had about herโand this alone lends its readers a clue on Carmillaโs motivation throughout the story as the author demonstrates the peculiarities that make the eccentric, gothic, and quite a subtle vampire that haunts Lauraโs memories and heart in the story. The book shows the dangers of being charmed, although the protagonist had some degree of suspicion. It is simple, though this simplicity does not lead to mediocrity. It is also predictable but it delivers predictability smoothly most of the time and ensures that it does not disrupt the immersed reader through Lauraโs constant worry and admiration of Carmilla. With these said, it will nevertheless keep you from taking a break.
And it is true that the other characters were overshadowed by them which highlights the horror of Carmilla but it makes scenes without these characters feel much less exciting. A few other problems with the book are unnecessary details in some parts that do not contribute anything substantial to the story and the last part of the book which mainly tells rather than shows the story. Laura, the narrator, is taken away from the interesting conclusions which made its ex*****on not as good as it could have been. Overall, it is a decent story, though it has definitive flaws.
Please share your insights about Le Fanu's book, if you have read it, in the comment section.๐โจ Happy LFridays and enjoy the weekend!
