Sokyo Lisbon is pleased to announce Landscapes: a journey through tactile landscapes, showing works from five different contemporary artists: Jun Kaneko, Kazuhito Kawai, Kimiyo Mishima, Toru Ishii and Yoon Heechang.
"Landscapes" are called keshiki in Japanese. The appreciation for the tactile qualities of surfaces, shapes and markings – the broader usage of the word keshiki – can be carried over to other objects, including even fabrics. In Landscapes we invite the visitor to discover a wide range of forms and textures – tactile landscapes – in different colors, mediums and dimensions.

EN - Ohira seems to leave his work’s interpretation to the viewer as he sculpts familiar forms (such as cars and pineapples) but that apparently have no meaning. What connects these shapes is a mystery that not even the artist can or has an interest in solving. The objects simply please him and that is already a good enough reason to create them.
PT - Ohira parece deixar a interpretação da sua obra ao espectador, esculpindo formas familiares (como carros e ananases) mas que aparentemente não têm qualquer significado. O que liga estas formas é um mistério que nem mesmo o artista pode ou tem interesse em resolver. Estes são objetos que simplesmente lhe agradam e isso é uma razão suficientemente boa para os criar.

EN - Obata draws inspiration from an early interest of his: breakdancing. He creates his works not from motivations of art for itself, but because it is a way of exploring dancing, fashion and the way bodies can move.
PT - Obata inspira-se num interesse que o acompanha desde a juventude: breakdancing. O artista cria as suas obras não pela arte em si, mas porque esta é uma forma de explorar a dança, a moda e a maneira como os corpos se podem mover.

Wabi-Sabi is a Japanese aesthetic and worldview accepting transience and imperfection, embracing the beauty in the imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. Derived from Buddhist teachings, its central tenets are around asymmetry, simplicity, asperity, and appreciation of the inherent integrity of natural objects and materials.
Wabi-sabi can be found in many Japanese art forms, such as ceramics, Ikebana (the art of flower arrangement) and the tea ceremony, after Sen no Rikyu redefined it to be centered around these ideals, in the 16th century.
Implementing the concepts of Wabi-Sabi teaches us that life is not about obtaining perfection but celebrating imperfection. Life is not always a perfect circle.

Fuku pays homage to her heritage through careful composition of the vessel form but it’s
the subversion of this canon, by rendering each piece functionless, that unsettles the
viewer. Each object demands further attention to discern each curve and interception
point.

Joe Isanako was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1994 and graduated from the
prestigious Tama Art University in 2018 having been commended for her talent on several occasions.
Her work derives from experimentation and observation of interaction between materials. Isanako often uses clay together with glass, metal, stones as well as other elements from the natural world such as sea shells, sea water and leaves and nuts.
“There is change, constancy, and universality every day in temperature, humidity and conditions of people and clay. I breath, touch, feel, and react to the difference between today and yesterday.” It is this considerate integration between clay, nature and time as well as the artist’s agency that offers a variety of expressions and landscapes in Isanako’s sculpture.

Dynamic, fragile, overwhelming, irregular, creative, comical, grotesque. These are strong words that are often used to describe Kazuhito Kawai’s sculptures.
“The sculptures cocoon my emotions and memories”. Using personal memories and pop culture references, Kawai’s pieces are also self-portraits of the artist, capturing and keeping emotions such as nostalgia and longing, which end up infecting the viewer, evoking their own memories and interpretations through their titles.

“As esculturas encasulam as minhas emoções e memórias”. Kazuhito Kawai was born in 1984 in Ibaraki, Japan. A while after studing Arts at the Chelsea College of Art and Design, University of the Arts London (BA.HONS), he returned to Japan and focused on ceramics. He graduated in 2018 at the Kasama College of Ceramic Art, Ibaraki, Japan. Kawai is one of the most praised emerging artists working with clay in contemporary art mainly because he succeeded to update the possibilities of expression through the ceramic material, going on a completely different path from ceramic tradition. The multiple layers of Kawai’s works show a constant dialogue between him and the clay, and also between him and the world around him.

Kazuhito Kawai nasce a 1984 em Ibaraki, Japão. Após completar o curso de Arte no Chelsea College of Art and Design, University of London, retorna ao Japão e em 2018 completa o curso de Cerâmica na prestigiada Kasama College em Ibaraki. Kawai apresenta-se como um dos artistas contemporâneos mais fascinantes a emergir do Japão e a trabalhar com cerâmica. Seguindo um caminho oposto ao da tradição, conseguiu elevar as possibilidades da matéria ao serviço da expressão plástica. As múltiplas camadas das suas construções revelam o diálogo contínuo e constante entre o artista, a cerâmica e o mundo que os rodeia.
