During the Malaysia ESG Forum 2023 “Making ESG Actionable for All”, I was invited to share on “Urban Food and Agriculture, Health, and Well-being” and I am honored to be joined by Associate Professor Dr Mahaaganapathy of LimKokWing University and Dr Stephen Thomas Homer of Sunway University. The Guest of Honor was Tuan Danny Bungan of The Ministry of National Unity Malaysia…I would like to thank the organisers of this seminar for the invitation…

During the panel discussion, I have shared 2 options on how food companies can be involved in the ESG journey…

This is a snapshot of what was shared during this seminar…

Option One To Implement a MSC Certification for Fishery

According to The Department of Fisheries Malaysia under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries, the production value of fisheries industry increased by 7.5%, an increase from RM13. 84 billion (in 2020) to RM14. 88 billion (in 2021).

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is a global nonprofit organization that works to end overfishing around the world and its goal is to improve the way our ocean is fished through the MSC Fisheries Standard and Chain of Custody Standard.

The Standard is comprised of the following core Principles:

Principle 1: Sustainable target fish stocks

A fishery must be conducted in a manner that does not lead to over-fishing or depletion of the exploited populations and, for those populations that are depleted, the fishery must be conducted in a manner that demonstrably leads to their recovery.

Principle 2: Environmental impact of fishing

Fishing operations should allow for the maintenance of the structure, productivity, function, and diversity of the ecosystem on which the fishery depends. The ecosystem includes habitat and associated dependent and ecologically related species.

Principle 3: Effective management

The fishery is subject to an effective management system that respects local, national, and international laws and standards, and incorporates institutional and operational frameworks that require use of the resource to be responsible and sustainable

MSC certification is a way of showing that a fishery meets international best practice for sustainable fishing. Fish and seafood from certified fisheries can carry the blue MSC label, assuring customers that what they're buying is sustainable, in which it is also to show the consumers that you are ESG friendly.

Option Two To Develop a healthy Plant Based Protein Ecosystem

The Global Plant-Based Protein Market size was worth USD 18.49 billion in 2022 and is estimated to grow at CAGR of about 14.1% over the forecast period to reach a value of USD 40.58 billion by 2028.

FoodNet International has designed and built three plant based protein manufacturing base in Singapore and to date, all of them uses soy based protein as the key ingredient in their process…
