“Our Hawkers, Our Heritage”

The hawker trade in Singapore has a grand vintage, with street vendors plying their wares since the 1800s. The exercise to legalise hawkers through an island-wide hawkers' registration was carried out in the 1960s. Coupled with this, the government embarked on a programme to construct markets and hawker centres between 1971 and 1986.

“Trash to Treasure

The former Hwa Chong Junior College (HJC, or HCJC) (華中初級學院) is the second junior college, and the first government-aided junior college to be established in Singapore. In 1970, the then Minister for Education Mr Ong Pang Boon approached a group of Chinese community leaders from the Singapore Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI )to discuss establishing ten junior colleges to replace the pre-university classes in the senior high sections of The Chinese High School and other high schools in Singapore.
After meetings and discussions, the Chinese community leaders declared to the government that due to financial constraints, they were able to raise sufficient funds for constructing only two of the originally intended ten junior colleges.
In 1974, Hwa Chong Junior College was inaugurated at the Bukit Timah Road campus. With a cohort size of 1500 students and 88 staff, Hwa Chong Junior College was the largest junior college in Singapore in terms of enrollment.
The junior college's name was an abbreviation of the high school's Chinese name, to mark the relationship between the two schools.”

The Chinese zodiac, known as Sheng Xiao (生肖), features 12 animal signs in this order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

Based on the lunar calendar that assigns an animal and its reputed attributes to each year in a repeating 12-year cycle. The 12 year cycle is an approximation to the 11.85-year orbital period of Jupiter. Originated from ancient zoolatry and boasting a history of more than 2,000 years, it plays an essential role in Chinese culture. The 12 Chinese zodiac animals in a cycle are not only used to represent years in China, but also believed to influence people’s personalities, career, compatibility, marriage, and fortune.
