We will be holding a series of events in the light of this. Here is a sneak peek at our events:

■ Bazaar Nozomi, Nozomi Online - 29 Jun

We are also holding an online run event ‘Go the Distance’. Sign up to run, walk, swim, or event cycle for 100km. Get your friends to follow you as you ‘Go the Distance’ for our cancer warriors. They can donate under your cause on our website, and see their hero (you!) on our leadership board weekly!

■ Concert Spero - 3 Aug
Our third event is our very own ’Concert Spero’ - that’s ‘hope’ in Latin. It will be held on the 3rd of August. The stories of our heroes will be woven in music, and for the night, you can live our warriors’ experiences, and that of their families’ through music, and storytelling.

We are also looking for volunteers!
So don’t be afraid to come join our team. Come, participate in our events, or join us as volunteers! Do so for our cancer warriors! What can be the faultlines in our education system? Kalsum Harun, author of this article, found that the recurring reference point was the PSLE.

“Firstly, the build-up to the PSLE in one’s early educational experience socialises our young into an examination culture that follows them through their academic life.

Secondly, the PSLE entrenches the notion of some schools being better than others – through elite selection and general “streaming.”

Thirdly, buying into the classic path of success, students endure years of intense competition and the anxiety it causes. It is understandable this mental and emotional fatigue eventually affects the mental health of our young.”

To what do we attribute the intense culture of competition and a high-pressure academic environment?

The article provides an in-depth examination of the evolution and impact of Singapore’s Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) and its broader implications for the education system and society. It discusses the historical context of the PSLE, its role as a sorting mechanism for schools and opportunities, and the societal pressures and stress it places on students, parents, and educators.

As part of the Compulsory Education Act 2000, all Singaporeans who have a child of compulsory school age (above 6 years old and under 15 years old) must attend a national primary school regularly.
As such, all parents who want to homeschool their child will need to apply to MOE to get exempted from CE.

*C.E." is the abbreviation for Compulsory Education.

In The C.E Talk, we walk you through how to apply for CE exemption and how this can be a meaningful way to document your own homeschooling journey.

This year’s C.E. Talk features homeschooling moms with recent experience with the application process, and whose stories will help assure those seeking an alternative education pathway for their children.

"Younger Singaporeans in particular have spoken clearly. They will strive and work hard for their goals. But they do not wish to be trapped in an endless rat race of hyper-competition. They want a refreshed Singapore Dream - one that is not defined by material success alone, but also offers meaning and purpose in their careers and their lives.

Check out this article introducing a thematic series on “Rethinking Singapore’s Primary School Leaving Examinations,” led by youth interns. It explores different aspects of rethinking the PSLE, including the possibility of doing away with it, reforming its conduct, and managing it in its current form.

The article discusses the contentious issue of the Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) in Singapore, particularly within the homeschooling community. It highlights the lack of consensus among homeschoolers regarding the usefulness of the PSLE and the challenges in expressing dissenting opinions. Despite this, there's a call for open dialogue and a reevaluation of the PSLE's role in the education system.

The series aims to foster debate and welcomes contributions from various stakeholders, recognizing the complexity of the issue and the need for collective action towards solutions.

Our Story

Welcome! This FB page is an offshoot of the HomeschoolSingapore.sg website, which promotes homeschooling in Singapore. The website serves the homeschooling community at large in Singapore with useful information and links. If you wish to explore homeschooling in Singapore, you may check the website in detail to find out more.

First, homeschool means parents are the primary educators of their children. It is not an afterschool job or another enrichment programme. Homeschool parents take ownership of their children’s education, within the framework of holistic development of mind, body, and soul.

Second, homeschooling in Singapore is unique. The community is a melting pot of expats and locals. Some families school and homeschool different children. Somtimes we think it is the most diverse, inclusive, international school in Singapore that’s free.

While the Ministry of Education (MOE) makes education compulsory across all learning spectrums i.e. special needs from 2019, homeschool remains an attractive option for two groups of people :
- Singaporean parents who look to a customised learning environment for their children
- expats in Singapore who desire a cheap, good and mobile education for their children

Homeschooling has been featured in the local media more, as younger parents seek alternative pathways of learning to suit their family vision or needs. We hope this site helps you with critical information about homeschool in Singapore, and encourage you that it is possible.

== what to expect on this FB page ==

Our page is a convenient way to gather information from our website and IG. If you are a Facebook person, subscribe away. Hopefully, you would find something that suits you. Our content include community events like the Homeschool Convention, public talks like The Outreach, helpful links to build knowledge and awareness (we do not endorse any bloggers unless stated on our website), and opportunities to work together.
