Joel, a young boy from Uganda, needed a new school uniform, but his parents couldn’t afford one. Taking initiative, he asked a kind lady if he could dig in her garden to earn some money. He planned to buy the uniform with his hard-earned cash.

One Friday, at the last site of the day in the Bronx, we were getting to the ‘Point of Decision’ in the lesson. Our team member had asked the children if they wanted to give the best gift they could ever give to Jesus, and they all shouted, ‘YES!’ She continued to tell them that the best gift they could give was their hearts.
At this moment, she asked them to close their eyes, and if they wanted to give their hearts to Jesus, they should raise their hands.
A little boy around five years old put his hand on his heart and lifted it as high as he could. He opened his eyes as if he had realized something, then he stood up, ran to his mother to put her hand on her heart, and jumped up so he could reach her. She bent over to see what he was trying to do, and he placed his hands gently on her eyes and closed them.
Witnessing this interaction brought me to tears because we have no idea what these kids and their families are facing. But, this little boy knew that his mom needed to give her heart to Jesus, and she did, too, because she kept her eyes closed and gave her heart to Jesus.”

It doesn't take much…

It really doesn’t take much to make a kid happy no matter where you are in the world.

I was in an indigenous village in the East Malaysia jungle visiting an amazing woman, Siok Hong, and her ministry work. She has been coming to several villages every month, staying for over a week in the past 10 years from Kuching. She has built 5 kindergartens for the Penan tribe villages here.

She could have been living a very comfortable retired life at 72, but she has committed to and serve these extremely under-served people.

I came here with my friend Pastor GT Lim from Sarawak Blessed Church and some of his leaders.

We took a 19-seater plane flying to a small town, Long Akah, drove for two hours on an extremely rocky and muddy road, changed to long boats that sit only 2 people each, then we went upriver for half an hour. This was the only way we could get to her village, Long Lamam.

My staff and I spent some time with some of the kids in her kindergarten yesterday. We made some balloon flowers for them to bring home for their moms and gave them some candies.

A little boy named Clement, who seemed to click with me in these 2 days, stayed back after school. We played together, shared some chocolate, and made more balloons.

We had an unusually good time just hanging out. He’s only 6 years old, but he’s very smart beyond his years.

I don’t speak the Penan language and he doesn’t understand English, but we had the best time together!

It really doesn’t take much to put a smile on a kid’s face. I pray you would decide to do that today as well, even in your jungle……

And I think we’ll all be hearing more about Clement in the future.

It is truly an amazing sight. It’s the ONE time of the week that the kids feel loved, feel safe, and are able to laugh and sing. They feel valued. They hear about JESUS, the LIGHT in the midst of their darkness . . . and learn that God SEES them and knows them.

And nearly every single one of them shows up with their own bowl and spoon in hand because at the end of Sunday School, we always make sure they can fill up with a hot meal.
