We had the lovely pleasure of welcoming our friend and producer Marcos Croce from for his very first visit to sunny Singapore last week. Started as our first direct trade relationship with a producer, the Croce family means a lot to us. From the first purchase back in 2012 to our first visit to their farm in 2014, it has been an incredible journey so far watching how the family has kept to their beliefs of being organic and regenerative at farm level, preserving clean water sources and influencing like minded neighbours who are keen to adopt similar practices.

Starting with their own family farm in 2010, Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza (FAF) now works with over 350 producers, most of them ranging from 2 to 30 hectares in size, helping them to improve their soils through good agroforestry practices that aim to restore soil health and biodiversity. act as the platform to connect these producers with buyers who are willing to pay more for a product that is more sustainably grown with the level of quality the buyers deemed fit for their respective markets.

Here at Nylon, our goal is to try to have a greater impact to the livelihoods of our producers by paying more and buying more from them year after year. But knowing our scale and size, we also understand the limitations of what we can do on our own. Therefore, we hope that with the uptick of cafes roasting their own coffees, we can bring together a community of small roasters to try out the producers whom we are already working with, and buy together with us. This way, we can have a greater impact with the volume that we can buy and everyone benefits from economies of scale.

The arrival of the Ethiopians fresh crops usually also signify the start of new harvests arriving in from East Africa and Central America. We have been roasting this Ethiopian Chelbesa for a few weeks and absolutely loving the vibrant citrus and peachy notes, as well as intense florals of bergamot and jasmine.

Make sure to look out for an espresso version of this same coffee which we will begin retailing this weekend!

Congratulations to all the competitors and winners in the recently concluded Singapore coffee competitions last week. It has been a really intense period as everyone pitched in to help our barista, Glenn for his first try at the Brewers Cup competition. We are thrilled to share that he came in 2nd runner-up with an incredible tasty washed Geisha variety from the producer Carlos Cerquera of Colombia.

We sourced this coffee, La Esperanza to share with our customers but it turned out to hit the right notes with the judges too. We have been roasting this coffee for 2 weeks and probably only have another 3 roasts left. We will also start brewing this coffee on our bar from this week and .koh will also be on shift this week to share his stories and experiences from this journey. We will also be chatting more about Carlo’s coffee in this month’s subscription video so make sure you look out for that!

Don’t worry, we are not putting any premiums on the coffee and service, we just love to share what we enjoy.

It’s competition time! will be heading down to MBS to support our barista, Glenn, who is competing in the finals of the National Brewers Cup. He will be first onstage at 8.45am tomorrow 28 June.

Our shop will open later at 10am tomorrow. Apologies for the inconvenience caused. For those who are interested to catch Glenn in action, the event is held at the MBS Expo & Convention Centre Hall D.

May the coffee be with us 🙌🏼

Our journey with La Marzocco started over 12 years back when we sourced our first machine, the legendary GS2 made in the eighties. Refurbished and brought back to life, we loved the wood panelling and how it brought our espressos to life right from the day we pulled our first shots on it. You can still see this beauty at the La Marzocco Museum in Melbourne!

We swapped out the GS2 with a true workhorse, the Linea PB ABR. With its integrated scales and brew by mass capability, it elevated our ability to brew with unparalleled consistency across our entire team. The wood panelling remains but everything under the hood was the latest electronics and gizmos at that time.

Fast forward to our 12th anniversary where we unveiled the latest from - the Strada X. First in Southeast Asia and probably the first to have it customised too in the world. Featuring the latest tech and pressure profiling, with a front panel design of sleek lines connecting the artisan Italian brand with Nylon, it’s our way of tracing back our roots to the dedication and passion by the folks crafting these amazing machines that have helped to showcase our espressos over the years. 🤍

What’s in the cup?

Continuing our goal of making an impact on the producers whom we buy from, can be as simple as how much they earn for the hard work that they put in.

Have you considered the price disparity between a local kopi and a cup of coffee purchased at Nylon? Have you ever pondered the actual cost of the coffee you’re consuming, disregarding expenses such as rent, labour, utilities, and taxes?

We first published our first transparency report in 2023 for all the coffees that we bought the year before. We listed down what we paid and broke down to what the producer gets eventually, and compared them with the C market price of Arabica coffees at that time.

We understand the importance of compensating producers fairly to ensure their well-being and to benefit the communities relying on their income for a better standard of living. This approach fosters hope and a sense of purpose among producers, driving them towards a more promising future.

Whether you’re purchasing a bag of beans for home brewing or stopping by for a cup of coffee, rest assured that you’re also supporting fair prices for our producers.

Thank you for your support and for taking an interest in this subject. We have just published our 2nd Transparency Report and we welcome everyone to spend 5 minutes of your time reading it.

Thanks to our friends , we are proud to bring Kickstarter sensation Meticulous Espresso to Singapore for the first time ever. The team from Meticulous Espresso will be here to showcase and share what goes behind their invention to bring better coffees to home.

Combining the richness of flavours from lever machines with the precise control and consistency of robotics. The Meticulous is all about pulling the perfect shot everytime and pulling what you need.

Imagine sampling an impeccable espresso from your favourite coffee roaster or coffeehouse and having that extraction profile of the espresso that you’ve just savoured condensed into a file on the cloud and downloaded onto your very own Meticulous at home where you can pull similar shots over and over again with high repeatability.

Be wowed, make a date with us on 15 May 2-4pm and find out more in person.

Register via link on our bio page. Seats are filling up quickly so do RSVP to avoid disappointment!

Counting down to our anniversary on May Day. 12 years of sourcing, roasting and brewing in one corner of Everton Park. We wouldn’t have made it so far without the support of the community, friends and our producers. Like past birthdays, we are only too grateful for friends who are pitching in with our fund-raising efforts for a clean water project in Madagascar that we have adopted this year with our partner

Look out for yummy bakes from , and J Cakes, cool-you-down soft serves by , beautiful ceramic wares by artisan potter and crochet workshops by to keep all the young ones busy. We will also be displaying the latest Linea Mini and Pico grinder from the wonderful folks , who will be donating $1 for every cup of coffee that we serve on the day - we hope to make 1000 cups 😂

So do make a date with us from 9-4.30 and come on down with your whole village and let us say thank you for supporting us through these amazing twelve years!

It’s people like Honorine who used to have to wake up at 3am everyday, walk for miles to collect water that most of us will deem as unsafe for consumption, that inspire us onto this journey to help the less fortunate population in the world to have access to clean water.

For our 12th anniversary, we have committed to donate US$9000 to build a piped system for a community in Madagascar through and their local partner, , working on the ground. This piped system is planned to serve approximately 90 people in the village and will give them access to clean and safe water. It might sound small but everyone deserves access to clean water on our planet, no matter where you are. With your support on 1 May, we hope to bring some joy to this community.

More information about the project is available from our journal on our web accessible via the link on bio page.

As we come to an end to our Central America sourcing trip, we look back at the many whom have greeted us through the trip. Old faces, new friends, they have truly made the trip feel like coming home despite the hectic journey of traveling through 4 countries in 12 days.

Coffee brought us to this lands and will continue to do so for a long time but it’s the people who continues to draw us back with their warmth and friendship. We look forward to sharing their stories and hard work with our customers in the months to come. Hasta el ano próximo - see you next year! 👋🏼

16/03/2024

Where it all started.

Back in 2011, as we were traveling through Central America hoping to get closer to the hands that grows the coffees, news of an El Salvadorean barista winning the world barista competition that year was just spreading. It was an exciting time back then as it was the very first time that a barista from a coffee producing country managed to clinch the top dog of the competition. His name was Alexandro Mendez, a young barista working for Lily Pacas (beside Jiamin above) at Viva Espresso in the capital of San Salvador.

Strangely enough, we happened to be in the city at the same time that he was preparing to recreate his routine to the general public outside the cafe that he was working in, and we were there to watch it live. We walked up to Lily, who also happens to be a 5th generation producer, who’s great grandfather discovered the Pacas variety almost a hundred years ago. We introduced ourselves, pre-Nylon, and explained our purpose - we hope to work with her family once we start roasting again.

13 years on, the Pacas family is truly like a family to us. We sit down with her parents for a meal after each cupping almost every year, and catch up on the year that has passed. We usually bring some Singaporean snacks to share with them and chat about how expensive cars are back home and they share with us how their president has changed the country from one of the most dangerous to one of the safest in the world. Just like any coffeeshop talk. Delicious pupusas and local treats always help to keep the chat going.

Alvaro (leftmost in the photo) has been working with the family for more than 40 years and has been the farm manager for Santa Petrona for decades. His son Freddy (2nd from left), who studied agronomy, has continued his father’s work and has been managing all the farms under the Pacas family. It’s another positive sign of how the next generation is seeing that specialty coffee has a bright future if we are to come together as one.

Coffee is the main character, but relationships are also the binder that keeps everything together.

Our passion for coffees stems from the diverse flavours of what they bring to the table. Whether it is fruity, chocolaty, nutty or floral, we seek to find interesting coffees and highlight them in a way that is approachable to all.

Our filter subscription program is a great way to start yourself on this journey as we will curate an exclusive coffee for that month to showcase to our subscribers. If you brew a fair bit of coffees daily (e.g. 3 to 4 cups), we have 2, 3 and 4 bags options catered to your consumption pattern. To keep make it interesting, we always send out different coffees for those 2-4 bags subscribers.

Whether it is a different processing technique, an unusual variety or just a coffee that we feel is extremely tasty, you can be sure to receive something that we hope you will enjoy.

This March, we have be sharing a coffee from Colombia. Last day to sign up will be the end of 28 Feb. Head over to our web shop or the link on our bio page. Don’t miss out on the chance to taste another new coffee!

Since Nylon opened its doors 11+ years ago, we have been encouraging customers to spend some time to enjoy their coffees in a proper ceramic or glass cup instead of doing a takeaway. Not many places do that and we have valid reasons why it makes a difference.

Taste experience, coffees taste better in a proper vessel. Paper cups affect the taste. It does not do full justice to the coffees we painstakingly source, roast and brew for you. Plastic cups are not chilled, so your iced coffees won’t be as cold as our pre-frozen drink-in glasses. Most importantly, these disposables add to the landfill and every time we use some single use cup/lid, our Planet Earth suffers.

After a long and hard decision, come 1 Feb 2024, we will commence charging for takeaway cups/lids. This additional fee is long overdue but we feel it’s time to do a little to recognise that the costs of such disposables has to be borne by consumers for their convenience. The additional fee will be part of our revenue, hence 1% will go to environmental causes as Nylon is a member of 1% for the Planet.

We strongly recommend customers to BYO their own cups/mugs to do takeaways as we continue to honour the 50 cents discount for BYO takeaway coffees. If you do not have a mug/cup to carry around with you, we do have the Nylon flavour mug/cup for sale in our shop and online. To kickstart this BYO journey, we are extending 15% discount off the Nylon flavour mugs/cups. Check out the designs now!

If not now, then when.

Sustainability is not a buzz word. It translates to our dedication to do what we can within our means to help with reducing wastes and preserving precious resources.

This Xmas, instead of buying a tree that is shipped all the way from the other side of the world, we figured our Monstera will do just as fine.

Looking forward to a green 🎄 🪅

Photos from Nylon Coffee's post 03/12/2023

As we come to the end of 2023, we pause to reflect on the ups and downs that happened over the year. We are blessed to live in a country free from conflict and most of us have never experienced displacement, famines or fear of bombs or war. This Christmas, we want to do our part to help those in Gaza.

There are severe shortages of essentials, such as fuel, water, and food, while medical supplies are depleting rapidly. While some humanitarian aid has arrived in Gaza, with support from the Egyptian Red Crescent and Palestine Red Crescent Society, it remains insufficient to meet the extensive needs. We hope to do our part too by supporting the humanitarian aid in Gaza.

We will have 20 Christmas gift sets comprising of 1 bag of coffee beans (choose either espresso/filter), 1 bag of 260g of wholesome Dearborn’s Dark Chocolate, Hazelnut & Sea Salt granola as well as 1 uniquely handcrafted ceramic cup by local artisan potter, Three12ceramics. Each Xmas Charity Gift Set will be retailing for $120 and all proceeds from the sale will be donated towards this cause.

Online sales start from Sunday 3 Dec midnight. Join us in spreading some joy and hope to those in Gaza with the support of our amazing friends at and . We can make a small difference and pray towards a world of peace. Nylon Community, let's keep up the spirit of doing good, feeling good, and making everything taste good.

Welcoming the new harvests from Colombia!

Colombia is one of the most interesting origins that we source from. From the North to the South, there’s coffee to be found throughout the entire latitude. The diverse geography and unique micro-climates contribute to a wide range of distinct-tasting coffees. Throw in new varieties and processing, and it becomes even more interesting.

We have always loved our Colombians, be it the warmth shared by the people or the amazing flavours from their coffees. This year, we made adjustments to our Colombian sourcing by splitting up our purchases from 2 main regions of the country and shipping them separately, just so that we can receive the coffees at their soonest, and have them to taste at optimal. Big shoutout to our exporter friends for their immense work behind the scenes to make this possible too.

Keep a lookout for some of our favourite farms and producers in the coming weeks!
