Collagen is the primary component of connective tissue, playing a crucial role in our skin, hair, nails, as well as bones, cartilage, ligaments, blood vessels, fat tissue, and gut. Factors like aging, genetics, poor diet, and lifestyle, as well as illness, can accelerate its depletion.
True collagen is sourced from animals, particularly connective tissue-rich parts like bone, skin, cartilage, sinews, and innards. However, these components are no longer commonplace in our diets, with many opting for lean meat. A collagen supplement can help you sustain the benefits of building and maintaining our body’s connective tissues as we age.
The challenge lies in choosing the right collagen supplement from a slew of products saturating the market, with many lacking proper scientific testing. Fear not, we are here to guide you through the process. ☝️
Another year, another batch of lessons we are taking away from Dr Tan’s desk.
Why “health”? Well, for decades, the beauty industry has been hyper-focused on the skin, but aging is a complex journey that goes beyond the surface. And that’s how we are approaching aesthetics, with the aim of broadening your view (and ours!) of what a real beauty routine really looks like. Because, in reality, there’s so much more to it.
After all, beauty has never been just skin deep.
Who else is keeping it simple next year? Whatever these words mean to you 😉
The holidays are for cozy vibes and catching up on your reading list. 📚✨ If your list needs a pick-me-up, we’ve got the perfect recommendation— “Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers.” Unwind, laugh a little, and take an enlightening journey into the science of stress. 🦓
Our skin is much more than a mere casing for the body. It’s a conductor of dynamic processes vital for our overall well-being.
The skin’s vast surface area, the size of a single bedsheet, forms a bustling landscape teeming with nerves, blood vessels, sweat glands, follicles, fat, connective tissue, and a microbiome.
Structurally, it comprises three layers. The dermis layer, bound together by collagen, astonishingly makes up 90% of this expansive organ. As a perpetual renewal engine, the skin sheds around 40,000 skin cells daily. 🤯
Understanding and appreciating the intricacies of the skin is a crucial the first step towards optimal health. Stay tuned to learn more from Dr Tan herself!

The increasing prevalence of insulin resistance (pre-diabetes) has been a worrying trend in Singapore, mirroring many westernised, developed societies.
In the recent years, researchers have found a connection between insulin resistance and acne. A study showed a correlation between the severity of acne and higher levels of blood markers associated with insulin resistance. In fact, acne has been coined “diabetes of skin”.
Epidemiological studies have also shown that acne is virtually absent in populations with natural, whole food diets with low glycaemic load and no dairy products. There are tribes that do not even have a word for “acne”, as they have never seen it before.

Rosacea, acne, and eczema are flags of deeper inflammation within. They're complex, often rooted in multifactorial influences. From food sensitivities to gut dysbiosis and hormonal balances, these factors intricately contribute to skin concerns. These underlying imbalances are often what makes you feel like you are reliving your teenage yeears.
Choosing to address the root cause rather than suppressing masking acne symptoms is the pathway to long-term skin health.
Stay tuned as we talk more about this in the next posts.
Acne is a complex skin condition with several triggers and contributing factors—so you can't expect to treat each spot the same way. Treating acne requires a long term, holistic view that targets both inside and outside. ⚖️

Did you know that Singapore recently became the 6th Blue Zone in the world? 🌏
While some may raise an eyebrow 🤔, considering our fast-paced, sleep-deprived, and desk-bound lifestyles it’s worth noting that dubbed us as an “engineered blue zone” compared to the other five locations, which have naturally developed their cultures and traditions over time.
There are profound insights on longevity we can glean from other Blue Zones, as they challenge conventional wisdom about aging and show that living well into your 90s and beyond is not only possible, but achievable through conscious lifestyle choices. 🌱
We talk often about quality rest and rejuvenation here, and we're taking our own advice with a company retreat 😊
Please note: The clinic will be temporarily closed next week, from Monday to Thursday. 💆♀️💆♂️

Emface, the rising star in the world of anti-aging treatments, is ready to take the stage alongside the timeless powerhouse, Botox. Both treatments work their magic on facial muscles, leaving us wondering: which one is Dr. Tan’s favourite? 🤔
Next week, Dr. Tan will dive into their unique benefits, differences and potential synergies — stay tuned.
Facial yoga is making waves as a natural way to tone and rejuvenate your face. What's our take? There's a lot to unpack when delving into facial workouts. Let's explore some of the nuances.
🤔 Do they work? It's not a simple yes or no.
The challenge lies in the fact that different people engage different muscles when making facial expressions. This makes it difficult to consistently target specific muscles with facial yoga exercises. The effectiveness of facial yoga may vary greatly from person to person. Think of it like you would with full-body workouts: Not every type of workout will yield the same result, nor will it work for every individual.
❓ It's not clear if it helps with "anti-aging."
Facial yoga exercises primarily focus on toning the muscles beneath the skin. While this can contribute to temporary improvements in facial appearance, it may have limited impact on structural changes such as sagging skin, collagen loss, or deep wrinkles. Other non-invasive or surgical procedures may be more effective for addressing such concerns.
⏰ Time commitment and consistency are key.
Like any exercise routine, you need to practice facial yoga regularly over an extended period to potentially see results. If you're seeking a quick fix or have limited time for daily exercises, it might not be the ideal choice. A small 2018 study found that a sustained 30-minute daily or alternate-day facial exercise program over 20 weeks modestly improved the facial appearance of selected middle-aged women.
💡 Bottom line: Facial yoga is an inexpensive, non-toxic, non-invasive, and safe option for anyone. There's nothing to lose, except time. It won't magically transform your face, but with time, it may help tone your overall appearance. Moreover, incorporating daily rituals like facial yoga is essential as it shows that you're taking the time to care for your skin.
Facial yoga expert Fumiko Takatsu says, "I truly believe 20% of the benefits come from the exercise itself, but 80% of the results come from the fact that you're paying attention to your facial expressions throughout the day. You catch yourself tightening your shoulders or tensing the forehead."

Isn’t it ironic how laugh lines, those etchings of joy and happiness, can sometimes make us look older than we truly feel? 🤔
When it comes to the main culprits of laugh line, it all boils down to two factors: volume loss and sagging skin.
EMFACE offers a powerful solution for that tackles both issues head-on — or rather, face-on.
EMFACE is the first and only FDA-approved device on the market that harnesses the dynamic duo of synchronised RF and HIFES energies.
Synchronized RF remodels & smooths skin by heating the dermis and increasing the levels of collagen and
elastin fibers.
While the HIFES technology restores & elevates support of facial tissues by selectively
contracting muscles and increasing density & quality of muscle structure.
Look as uplifted as you feel, and smile with renewed confidence. 😊
{FROM THE DOCTOR’S DESK}
Speaking to patients, I’ve realised that many have not heard of the superhero molecule called glutathione before. No, it is not a new treatment to tighten the glutes.
Allow me to introduce our body’s master antioxidant, major detoxifier, and maestro of the immune system – “Glue-Ta-Thigh-Own.”
The good news is: Our body produces its own protective glutathione naturally.
The bad news? Aging, poor diet, chronic stress, trauma, infections, autoimmune diseases, chronic inflammation, alcohol, medications, environmental toxins, and electromagnetic radiation, among others, can all deplete our body’s glutathione levels.
This leaves us more susceptible to fatigue, infections, dullness, premature skin aging, and chronic illnesses.
