To speed up diagnoses and treatments for lumbar spinal stenosis—where the spinal canal narrows and puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerves—NUH has introduced Spine AI, a deep-learning tool designed to assist radiologists with diagnosing and interpreting spinal MRI scans.

With Spine AI, quicker decisions about surgeries or other treatments can be made. The tool also produces clear, informative videos that explain surgical procedures to kidney cancer patients.

Spearheaded by Drs Andrew Makmur and James Hallinan, this innovation marks a significant leap in streamlining workflows and enhancing patient outcomes at NUH.

“I did not wear seat belt and can’t recall 15 years of my life after accident. It was a painful lesson for me, but I’m very fortunate to have survived. I hope my story reminds everyone not to take any chances and to always wear your seat belt,” shares Ms Azimah, who narrowly survived a serious road accident.

After the collision, she spent three days in a coma, underwent brain surgery, and lost 15 years of her memory, making even simple daily tasks a struggle.

Adj Asst Prof Raj Menon explains that without a seat belt, the energy transfer during a crash can throw you against the doors, windshield, or even eject you out of a vehicle, resulting in more severe injuries.

Gender-specific factors contribute to the increased risk of dementia in women.

Hormonal changes during menopause, sleep deprivation combined with the emotional stress of managing multiple social roles, and higher rates of depression and anxiety all play a part. Malays and Indians are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease compared to Chinese.

Dr Jennifer Hung recommends mitigating these risks through a heart-healthy lifestyle, which includes aiming for at least 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, along with strength-training exercises twice a week.

Relying on caffeine combos to stay awake? It could be harming your health.

Ms Rachel Wong warns that mixing coffee with energy drinks raises your caffeine levels, potentially leading to symptoms such as a racing heart, high blood pressure, anxiety, and jitters.

Mixing energy drinks with alcohol can also mask how drunk you are, increasing the risk of overconsumption and alcohol poisoning, as well as related harms like impaired driving and injuries.

Following the success of Nutri-Grade measures for sugar-sweetened beverages, nutrition labels are expanding to include pre-packed salt, sauces, seasonings, instant noodles, and cooking oil. With high sodium and saturated fat contributing to high blood pressure and cholesterol, these labels will help you make more informed choices.

Professor Tan Huay Cheem points out that even a small reduction of 350mg in sodium daily can make a substantial difference, as shown by a 2010 American study. In Singapore, where hypertension is on the rise, this could play a crucial role in improving heart health.

Mpox might sound worrying, but it’s very different from Covid-19.

Unlike Covid-19 which spreads through the air, mpox mainly spreads through direct face-to-face contact or close interactions, much like the sexually transmitted human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). With Singapore’s limited connections to Africa, the immediate risk remains low.

Prof Dale Fisher explains that while HIV is a chronic infection with a long incubation period, mpox is self-limiting, and most people recover fully.
