Dr. Sharmini Su Sivarajah showed incredible professionalism and compassion despite facing abuse from a patient. Read her story here.
Dr Sharmini Su Sivarajah, Consultant at Sengkang General Hospital's Colorectal Service, encountered abuse from a patient who was opioid-dependent and demonstrated drug-seeking behaviour at the hospital.
The patient arrived at the hospital complaining of non-specific abdominal pain and insisted on receiving opioid-associated drugs. When she refused an alternative medication, she then became agitated and spat on Dr Sharmini while continuing to verbally abuse the hospital staff.
After being spat on, Dr Sharmini was greatly taken aback. However, in her determination to help the patient resolve her issue with opioids, she remained as calm as she could be. She continued to explain to the patient that the hospital could provide her with better alternatives that could help with her pain as well as reduce her dependency on that particular drug.
"Past experiences (with abusive patients) have taught me that reasoning with patients can work in getting them to understand our perspective as well."
In this case, while the patient's behaviour became increasingly disruptive, the Patient Experience team together with security and CISCO officers were called in to manage the situation. There was also a need to engage higher management to resolve the issue. A police report was filed, and the patient received a cautionary notice.
Our healthcare workers care for their patients' overall well-being and do their best to ensure that everyone receives the right treatment that is best for their health. As patients, let's do our part by showing more kindness and understanding towards them.
