One of our most common requests for boys’ cakes is definitely superhero-themed! Creating beautiful designs that do not use non-food-safe toys, yet are not tacky, is a real challenge. Truth be told, I have always struggled with designing men’s cake. I don’t want to create the cliche “suit” cake, golf cake, or the run of the mill Champagne/alcohol cake. I challenged my self to look at elements inspired by nature, but instead of flowers (my usual to go), I saw beauty in geometrics, rocks, and of course the sea. Minimalist, clean, with a touch of Yume elegance, unveiling our men’s collection design.

Abit of grandmother story, the photos here are all done in house (abit proud to say this, this photo was shot by yours truly 🙋🏻♀️) i use a Canon 6D mark 2 and a leica Q2 interchangeablely. And just two months ago, i went to shopping with my friend i realised that DSLR are mostly mirrorless now (correct me if im wrong photographer friends) 🥲🤣 and what im using is probably an antique.

Sometimes people ask why are cakes with sugar flowers expensive and pretty much this is your answer. Here’s some behind the scene shot of making the mini king protea which i was so proud of featured in magazine.
Every petal which was seen on the wedding cake are all hand made petal by petal. Whenever there is a new flower requested, R&d time and wastage have to be factored in too. 😌

Mini king protea tutorial i did for the magazine some time back. I remember the first time i did a king protea, i literally made individual florets using fondant one by one. In this tutorial, i have upgraded my mind and use royal icing to pipe the florets instead. 🫣

I have always found royal icing brush embroidery messy at best. So here’s after much R&D and improvement, my new form of brush embroidery which is elegant, and yet beautifully executed.
Most students or people who have seen me work will know how my hands tremble. Insanely unstable and horrible to work. I always joke that with this tremor, my flower piping will always look natural with all the gentle folds.
Royal icing extension work however is a different ballgame for me. It poses challenges for my very impatient self and there is close to zero room for error. Come join me for my upcoming royal icing extension masterclass. With only 4 students each class, this two day class will open your mind to create beautiful piping techniques used for international cake competitions and royalty weddings.

There is a love hate relationship between me and my signature acrylic tiers. Love it because it is so elegant and definitely timeless. Hate it? Transportation is hell and the chance of the cake toppling over is pretty high, so everything have to be setup on site. 🫣
