Matt 6:16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full."

Matt 17:20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

15/04/2024

This is the church theme for this year and let us understand the context of what this verse means.

In 1 Corinthians 10:31, Paul instructs the Corinthian believers, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

By itself the verse’s meaning seems plainly obvious: glorify God in everything you do. Well, of course that’s true at the highest level. But what does Paul specifically mean by glorify God, and what does he mean by everything?

When we look at the verse in its wider context, we see that Paul’s command to do all to the glory of God relates to cultural idols, the Christian conscience, and how we live before an unbelieving world.

In this verse, Paul is speaking to believers in the Greek city of Corinth under the Roman Empire. In 1 Corinthians 10, Paul addresses the topic of how the Corinthian Christians were to relate to idolatry around them in a polytheistic Greco-Roman society. In all they did, even eat and drink, they were to glorify God.

In the time of Paul, much of the meat sold in Corinthian markets had been ritually sacrificed to idols. Temples were hubs of social and economic activity as well as worship, so eating meat that had been sacrificed to idols could be seen as partaking in idolatry. All the Corinthian Christians (except perhaps the Jewish ones) would have had backgrounds in pagan idol worship. When they became Christians, they renounced these idols and all the expressions of worship associated with them.

The problem was that idol worship was woven into the very fabric of Corinthian civic, trade, and social life — it was culturally pervasive. Idol temples were social centers, and could function similarly to public restaurants (1 Corinthians 8:10). And much of the meat sold in the markets and served in homes had been ritually offered to idols (1 Corinthians 10:25, 27). That meant eating meat could be interpreted as an act of idolatry, a betrayal of Christian beliefs (1 Corinthians 8:10).

However, some Corinthian Christians were discovering that “an idol has no real existence, and that there is no God but one” (1 Corinthians 8:4). Since idols were no real things, they realized that meat sacrificed to idols was meat sacrificed to nothing (1 Corinthians 10:19–20). Therefore, eating meat sacrificed to idols could not be idolatry if the people eating knew that idols weren’t real. They were free to eat this meat with a clear conscience and Paul agreed with them (1 Corinthians 10:26, 29).

First, not all the Corinthian Christians “possessed this knowledge” (1 Corinthians 8:7). Some of them, perhaps newer converts or those who, for whatever reason, had tender consciences, still felt like eating meat sacrificed to an idol was a form of idolatrous worship. For them, to eat sacrificial meat was to deny Christ.

Second, others, who may have even believed idols were false gods and would face temptation to a different kind of idolatry by eating such meat. Many Corinthian converts renouncing the false pagan religion(s) meant renouncing social customs, family traditions, and friendship networks. Imagine the temptation some experienced to give at least an appearance of homage to the prevailing religion in order to avoid losing employment, social status, and family disapproval.

Third, there was the issue of gospel witness among non-Christians who were watching the Christians. What would non-Christians think of Christians who knowingly ate meat sacrificed to idols? They would likely assume that the Christians exalted the idols just like they did, and therefore there was no real reason to give heed to Christians’ odd claims. And what would Jews think of this behaviour? That Christians were just like non-Christians and that Christianity was demonic.

In 1 Corinthians 10:23–30, Paul builds an argument to his conclusion in verse 31. Christians may eat the meat sacrificed to idols without qualms, knowing that idols are false and that all good things come from God; however, they also need to consider whether doing so will affect the conscience and faith of others: “No one should seek their own good, but the good of others” (verse 24). If Christians whose consciences were free to eat meat sacrificed to idols weren’t very careful, the exercise of their freedom could destroy the faith of another Christian (1 Corinthians 8:9–11) or ruin Jesus’s reputation among non-Christians (1 Corinthians 10:27–29).

Because of this, Paul advises discernment and deference. As believers eat and drink, they must do all to the glory of God; that is, they must eat and drink in a way that will not cause problems for other believers. Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved” (1 Corinthians 10:31–33).

More succinctly, in 1 Corinthians 8:13, Paul explains, “Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.” And then he went on to describe throughout chapter 9 many ways he voluntarily abstained from things he was free to enjoy as a Christian — not to mention an apostle — like various kinds of food and drink, marriage, and a full-time ministry salary (1 Corinthians 9:4–7).

Paul’s whole purpose in life was to win as many people to the gospel as possible (1 Corinthians 9:22–23), so he sought to remove as many obstacles to the gospel as possible (1 Corinthians 9:12). For Paul, this was Christian freedom: “For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them” (1 Corinthians 9:19). So, when Paul heard that the Corinthian Christians were arguing over whether or not they were free to eat sacrificial meat, he essentially told them they were missing the point:

“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbour. (1 Corinthians 10:23–24)

To Paul, this was true Christian freedom: to do whatever it takes to love one’s neighbour for the sake of Jesus.

So, when Paul talks about eating and drinking to the glory of God, he isn’t talking about praying before meals. Nor is he emphasizing how even the smallest things in our lives should be dedicated to God—that truth is taught in other verses (see Colossians 3:17). Rather, 1 Corinthians 10:31 highlights using discernment when exercising freedom in Christ. Love dictates that all Christians make allowances for their weaker brothers. And having the “right” to do something does not mean we are free to do it in every circumstance, regardless of its effects on others.

We glorify God when, out of love for him, we lay down our rights, our freedoms, in eating or drinking or whatever in order to do what is most loving toward others, either for the “progress and joy [of their] faith” (Philippians 1:25), or that they may be saved (1 Corinthians 9:22). Paul’s very next sentence says, “Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God” (1 Corinthians 10:32).

While we have freedom in Christ, our choices should be guided by love for others. We shouldn't do things that might make them stumble in their faith, even if they're harmless for us.

Hebrews 10:24–25
"And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near"

Christianity is not a faith which God intended to be lived out alone. Encouraging others and being encouraged by others are both central to the life of an obedient believer.

Dear All,

Following discussions, Exco has reached the decision to temporarily suspend the live streaming of Sunday services, effective December 3rd. This decision will remain in place until the need for live streaming arises again.

This shift reflects our commitment to prioritizing fellowship and personal connection with newcomers during Sunday services. By dedicating resources previously allocated to live streaming, we aim to foster a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all attendees.

We understand that some may rely on the live stream, and we appreciate your understanding in this matter. We are confident that this temporary suspension will ultimately enhance the overall experience for everyone involved in our Sunday services.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Exco Team

What The Woman Healed Of Bleeding Teaches Us About Jesus

There are 37 miracles of Jesus mentioned in the Gospels, and two-thirds of these involved him healing someone. Whenever Jesus healed someone, his focus was on that person, he engaged with them, He looked into their hearts and He gave them his full attention.

But there is one, remarkable, healing story that is very different to all of the others. One story that contrasts with the typical way that Jesus engaged with the people He was healing. The story of the woman who was healed by faith of a condition that made her bleed by touching Jesus’ cloak.

In Mark 5:24-34, “A large crowd followed and pressed around him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.

When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”

“You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’” But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.””

In this story we meet a woman who had a bleeding condition, and the issue had continued for twelve years. Second, she had spent all her money on treatments from many doctors, and nothing had helped; in fact, the blood issue had only grown worse. Jewish Law declared her to be ceremonially unclean due to her bleeding issue (Leviticus 15:25-27). This meant that she would not have been permitted to enter the temple for Jewish religious ceremonies. According to the Law, anything or anyone she touched became unclean as well. The fact that she was in the crowd pressing around Jesus means that each person who bumped into her would have become unclean, too—including Jesus. But, after twelve years of suffering, she would have been an outcast and lonely, obviously desperate for a miracle.

But even in the desperate position that she was in there lives in her a determination to keep trying, she hasn’t completely given up. She hears about Jesus and has faith that if she can just touch his cloak, that will be enough to heal her. She doesn’t think that someone like her could actually ask Jesus for help, but she recognises his power. She follows him and takes her chance, touching his robe and immediately is healed.

As soon as the woman touches Jesus, her bleeding stops and she knows she’s been healed. In an instant, Jesus does what no doctor in twelve years had been able to. This proves the power of Christ, of course, but it also illustrates an important point about Jesus and the Law. In Leviticus 15:31 God says, “You must keep the Israelites separate from things that make them unclean, so they will not die in their uncleanness for defiling my dwelling place, which is among them.” In the Old Testament, the temple was where God dwelt among the Israelites, but in the New Testament, God dwelt among men in the person of Jesus Christ (see John 1:14). Through Jesus the penalties of the Law are reversed, and the contamination of this world had no effect on Christ. The woman did not make Jesus (God’s dwelling) unclean—He made her clean!

Jesus immediately responds to the woman who touched His clothing and was healed. People were pushing and pressing into Him from all over, yet He stops, turns, and asks, “Who touched my clothes?” (Mark 5:30). The disciples were incredulous, but Jesus knew that healing power had gone out of Him. We can’t “steal” a miracle from God. After the woman comes forward and explains herself, Jesus clears up any misconceptions about her healing, saying, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering” (Mark 5:34). God is moved to action by our faith, even when He’s in the middle of doing something else!

Jesus, called her “Daughter”; she was publicly declared not just to be ritually clean again, but accepted fully, she was called daughter by God’s son! Instead of Jesus telling her not to tell anyone what He had done, He was declaring it to the world so that everyone knew that she was restored in body, mind and soul.

Jesus could have healed the woman and kept on walking to His original destination. But He didn’t do that. Jesus stopped what He was doing and acknowledged the result of this woman’s faith: her complete and instantaneous healing. Jesus is never in a hurry, He gives us time, He gives us His full attention. Nothing is as important to Jesus as that moment that he is connecting with us. He wants to hear our whole story even though He knows what is already in our hearts. Whether that moment involves us, or a loved one, being healed physically or not is not promised; but what Jesus does is to bring healing to our souls, to our very being, restoring us to Him, calling us “daughter”, calling us “son”.

Whatever our story, whatever our journey through life has been to this point, let’s reach out and touch Jesus in faith, and let Him minister to us, to bring healing to us, to restore us, to welcome us into his family… This story tells us that no matter how desperate our situation, no matter how difficult things are for us, or for our family, we are never out of His reach. In faith seek Him, He will be there for us to respond to our faith in love.

W**ding Out Sins

The word “weeds” has been defined as a plant that is out of place, an unwanted plant, or a plant that is a pest in that it interferes with crop or livestock production. Those who are into gardening knows that how fast weeds can grow and multiples if untended, a sprig budding can grow into a small bush in a matter of few weeks. W**ds can be just like sin, when we ignore or deny its presence, sin can invade our lives like unwanted overgrowth and darken our hearts towards God.

When we fail to consistently admit our sins to God, they keep on spreading, gaining traction. Christians justify this because we’re not committing “big” sins such as murder, robbery, or adultery. But soon, the little ones—impatience, partiality, envy, judgment, and others— overtake our garden of life, choking out the fruit of the Spirit.

We must deal with the sin in our life before we draw away further from God and the fruits of the Spirit can flourish.

Three Steps to W**d Sin from Your Life:

1. Acknowledge, Admit, and Confess

Without acknowledging we have a problem, we won’t get help. We have to own up to our specific sins and confess them to God. To accomplish this, we do the hard work of recognizing and admitting them to ourselves. And we need to do it daily.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9 NIV)

2. Repent.

After confessing, we do more than ask God’s forgiveness. We work to avoid the sin. Repenting from sin means turning away from what is wrong and turning to God. It means we resist sin, big and small, and obey Him.

“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” (Acts 3:19 NIV)

3. Ask for Help

We need God’s help with sin. First, we ask Him to reveal our sin to us. We ask Him for the strength to overcome it before it takes root. Then we consistently nourish the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives through daily prayer and Bible reading.

“Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live.” Romans 8:12-13 NLT).

Our sinless God has no darkness in Him . . . at all. As His children, we’re equipped and charged to face sins head-on so we can “walk in the light, as he is in the light” (1 John 1:7). Through confession and repentance, we experience forgiveness and freedom from sin (vv. 8–10) because we have a great advocate—Jesus (2:1). He willingly paid the ultimate price for our sins—His lifeblood—and “not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world” (v. 2).

Sunday Online Service extended to January and February 2022
线上主日聚会展延至 2022 年 1 月和 2 月

Dear Bros and Sis
亲爱的弟兄姐妹,

Pastor and the SCC Exco deliberated and decided to continue with online Sunday Service for the next 2 months of January and February 2022.
牧师和教会的 执行委员再三考量后决定于接下来的 两 个月(即 2022 年 1 月和 2 月)继续在线上举行主日聚会。

We certainly pray that we can resume in-person Sunday Service but much uncertainty abounds at this time with how the new variant will pan out. Hence, the decision to extend online service.
当然我们祈求可以恢复现场主日聚会,但此时新变种病毒带来了许多未知数。因此,我们决定展延线上主日聚会。

Let us spare no effort to pray for an end to this long-drawn pandemic and also to the spiritual welfare of all our members, for that alone is key to us being ‘overcomers’ in a fallen world. We must have and claim that Hope.
让我们为这持久疫情能够结束和为我们教会成员的属灵健全不懈地祷告。因为不懈的祷告是我们在这堕落世界中成为“得胜者”的关键。我们必须拥有并获取这盼望。

Still, it’s our pleasure to greet all members ‘Happy New Year and may the Holy Spirit transform our families into spiritual families in the coming year’.
尽管如此,我们还是欣喜地祝大家“新年快乐,愿圣灵在来年将我们的家庭转变为属灵的家庭”。
