Internews provides communities the resources to produce local news and information with integrity and independence, with global expertise.
A two-day community and digital journalism training is currently underway in the Iringa region. This comprehensive training program has brought together journalists from various media organizations operating within the region. The primary objective of this initiative is to empower these journalists with the skills and knowledge necessary to craft news stories that can generate positive outcomes within the community.
Zanzibar Minister of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Ms Tabia Maulid Mwita emphasized the importance of proactive engagement by government information officers in addressing fake news shared on social media. "When confronted with mis and disinformation shared on social media, your immediate response should involve countering it and offering an explanatory clarification." She said this while inaugurating a two-day training program for Government Communications Officers, jointly organized by Internews in partnership with the Ministry of Information and Culture in Zanzibar. The primary aim of this training is to enable free flow of access to information between the government and the public.

With support from Internews and other development partners, Misa Tanzania organized a freedom of expression forum that served as a platform for exchanging a multitude of ideas on how the media and civil society organizations (CSOs) can advocate for freedom of expression in both the media landscape and civic sphere. The event was well-attended by a diverse range of participants, including media stakeholders, MISA Tanzania members, and other individuals interested in the subject matter.
"The government under President Samia recognizes the good work done by journalists and is side by side with journalists and that is why within two years. In her administration, we have not heard of any media outlet that has been closed and newspapers that were closed have been opened." said the forumâs guest of honor Gerson Msigwa, The Director of Information Services and Chief Government Spokesperson, representing the Minister of Information, Communication & ICT.
Commemorating the May 3, 2023, the President of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, reaffirmed the government's commitment to upholding and valuing the right to freedom of information and expression. Attendees being media stakeholders and ambassadors from various countries, President Mwinyi acknowledged the significant increase in media establishments across the country, citing the favorable environment created by both governments as a contributing factor. He highlighted that Tanzania now has 312 registered newspapers, compared to just 10 after gaining independence. Additionally, he mentioned that the new media laws have been drafted in Zanzibar and are awaiting submission to the House of Representatives.
Today marks the beginning of a conference in to commemorate the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day. Media stakeholders from various organizations and institutions across the country are convening to deliberate on the future of justice, with a focus on how freedom of expression can serve as a catalyst for promoting and upholding other fundamental human rights. ,
