2024 Solar Eclipse 04/01/2024

2024 Solar Eclipse - April 8, 2024
Pennsylvania has the distinct privilege of once again being in the direct line of a total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. The last time Pennsylvania was in direct line with a total eclipse was 1806. While the path is somewhat westwardly oriented in comparison to the last total eclipse, much of Pennsylvania will lie within the paths of totality or partial totality.

Astronomical events such as solar and lunar eclipses have long drawn the interest and imagination of individuals of all ages. “Once in a lifetime events" such as the total solar eclipse set to occur on April 8, 2024, have now spurred a frenzy of interest, including entrepreneurial and tourism opportunities, thanks to online and broadcast media. The next total solar eclipse that can be seen from the contiguous United States will occur in 2044.

This resource is designed to help the educational community as they plan events and communications related to the Monday, April 8, 2024, total solar eclipse event and other solar viewing opportunities.

A 639-year-long John Cage organ performance has a rare chord change on Monday 02/05/2024

"An epic, centuries-long performance of one of the most iconic pieces of experimental music has a note change, two years in the making.

Organ2/ASLSP, ‘As Slow as Possible’ is a keyboard work written by American avant-garde composer John Cage in the mid-1980s. The score consists of eight pages of music, to be played on the piano or organ, as the name suggests, very slowly.

When performing the piece, musicians observe the composer’s instruction. The eight pages of music are taken very slowly, and it often takes over an hour to complete the work. In 2009, organist Diane Luchese gave a rendition that lasted for 14 hours and 56 minutes.
But all is eclipsed by a performance on a custom-built organ at St. Burchardi Church in Halberstadt, Germany. The Halberstadt performance began in 2001 ..."

Journeys in Youth Development 08/08/2023

New Podcast from the National Institute for Out-of-School Time:
Journeys in Youth Work

Youth work is a sacred opportunity to make a significant difference in the lives of children and youth. In a new publication from Information Age Publishing (IAP), curated and edited by the National Institute on Out-of-School Time (NIOST), personal narratives written by youth workers shine a light on the intricate connections between research and practice, touching upon both the vulnerability and triumph of youth development work. In this podcast series, youth workers read excerpts from their essays, and share how youth workers’ lived experiences inspire the ability to build the relationships that are the foundation of positive and healthy youth development. From relationships comes engagement, and from engagement, transformation—centered in equity, inclusion, and belonging. No one is better able to advocate for these truths than the professionals who found themselves—by whatever means—working with young people to bring positive change to their lives, their communities, and our world.

Endowment Fund Established to Support SOE Students in meeting the costs of becoming a teacher

Recognizing the additional costs borne by students seeking to become teachers (clearances, shots, certification exams, etc.), Patricia L. Squire left money in her will to establish an endowment to help meet these costs. The endowment is set up so that others may donate to it, as well. Patricia Squire graduated from Beaver College in 1962 and taught third and fourth graders in Springfield Township, Montgomery County for 30 years.

This support will mature (and become available for distribution) in 12-18 months. At that time, it will provide support for 2-3 Arcadia students with demonstrated financial need each year. As the fund grows, it will provide support for more students.

Thanks are extended to Brigette Bryant, VP for Advancement and Alumni Engagement for her vision in nurturing this fund from conception to completion.
