Why are our professors setting materials on fire in class?
"Perplex the Professors" is the final project for MSE 3015: Electronic, Optical, and Magnetic Properties of Materials. Students are challenged to bring in an engineered material, relevant to or taken from an electrical, optical, or magnetic device that will stump a panel of professors. After analyzing its structure, composition, and properties in a written report, the students give the material to the professor panel that will then have to guess the material's composition and the material's application using only a set of simple hand tools. The guesses from the professors will then be compared to the results provide from the group.
In addition to summarizing the learnings of the students from this class in a fun way, MSE Assistant Professor Lauren Garten wants to teach the students about practical ways to apply the information learned in class: "You can do a lot with some simple hand tools and some logic."
Our researchers are doing amazing things! Check this out!
Get excited for another Day in the Life of an MSE student tomorrow! The takeover will be hosted by one of our students, Avril!

The Atlanta Center for Microsystems Engineered Point-of-Care Technologies (ACME POCT) has recently received an award of $7.8 million from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering of the National Institutes of Health. Over the next five years, this substantial grant will support inventors nationwide in their efforts to develop, translate, and test microsystems-based point-of-care technologies, with the ultimate goal of enhancing patient care.
Point-of-care technologies represent a pioneering approach to medical diagnostics, allowing tests to be conducted outside traditional laboratory settings, closer to patients. This advancement significantly accelerates the decision-making process for healthcare providers, making it more efficient and convenient.
Dr. Eric Vogel, the Hightower Professor of MSE and a co-principal investigator, emphasizes the importance of microsystems diagnostics due to their small size, low power requirements, and advanced engineered materials. This portability is essential for point-of-care testing.
