🔆 Spotlight: Barbara Ladd's captivating book "The North of the South: The Natural World and the National Imaginary in the Literature of the Upper South."

✒️The Deep South — and its plantations — has become the primary focus of Southern literary studies. In “The North of the South,” Ladd examines the Upper South, exploring the fluidity of regional boundaries and arguing for greater attention to the impact of its distinctive ecosystems on literature. All the while, she also points out the interconnected ways that the Upper South’s cultural and natural histories are foundational to our national imaginary.

💙 Barbara Ladd is a professor of English at Emory University. She has lectured widely both nationally and internationally on southern literature.

Wendy Dubin describes having ovarian cancer as not only a physical challenge but an existential crisis that robbed her, in her words, of her soul.

After surviving two occurrences of the cancer, the normally vibrant, active woman was in constant pain, frightened, and demoralized. “I was getting from day to day, but I didn’t feel like I was living,” she says. “I was enduring.”

When she heard about a clinical trial being run at Emory involving psilocybin — the mind-altering compound in “magic mushrooms” — she jumped on it. Dubin describes her as spiritual, emotional, and life changing.

🏛️ Emory's Alumni Memorial University Center (AMUC) has an interesting history. Built in 1950 to honor members of the community the university lost at war, the AMUC was the original Atlanta campus’ student union. In 1985 the building was partially enclosed by the newly built Dobbs University Center. Several years ago, the AMUC was returned to its original status as a standalone building.

Global antimicrobial resistance poses and dire and growing threat.

Imagine a time when the drugs doctors have prescribed for years to treat common illnesses no longer work. When everything from a bout of strep throat to wisdom teeth extraction could be lethal. When many of the miracles of modern medicine, from chemotherapy to organ transplantation, are no longer possible.

Experts say that time is approaching if we are not able to restrain the formidable and growing threat of antimicrobial resistance.

🔆 Spotlight: "One Nation Under Guns: How Gun Culture Distorts Our History and Threatens Our Democracy" by Dominic Erdozain, research fellow, Candler School of Theology.

📘 In “One Nation Under Guns,” Erdozain argues that because of parsing legislation on background checks and bans, we fail to ask what place guns should have in a functioning democracy. By taking readers on a historical journey, Erdozain emphasizes how the founding fathers feared individual tyranny as much as royal tyranny. In this text, Erdozain argues that to save our democracy, we must fight for the founders’ true idea of what it means to be free.

Emory Metabolic Camp was designed for young women with PKU (phenylketonuria) or MSUD (maple syrup urine disease), who have to limit their intake of naturally occurring protein to stay healthy. This means no meat, fish, poultry, dairy or even bread.
