Seeing young people give back always fills us with Hope! 🧡 We want to recognize a very special volunteer who has been serving at Hope Atlanta since last July: Melani Macik! Melani is a beloved presence at the Women’s Community Kitchen, where she has volunteered every Wednesday morning despite keeping a busy schedule as an honors student and psychiatric research intern.
"Developing a connection with the ladies is the most rewarding part of volunteering," she says. "There are people who expect to see me. They remember me, and I remember them, and I check to see how their health is doing."
Menani, you’ve been such a bright light to us and our clients. We’ll miss you when you head to Yale this fall to start your Ph.D, but your kindness and compassion will leave a lasting impact. Thank you! 🌟

Early in her social services career, Alexia Hunter received sage advice that would change her outlook and trajectory: Work with a population you’d never see yourself working with. Now a master-level social worker and SSVF Program Supervisor at Hope Atlanta, Alexia embodies the growth mindset she encourages clients to adopt along their journeys out of .
Alexia was recently promoted to supervisor after starting as a Hope Atlanta case manager. She estimates she’s housed or prevented homelessness for about 60 , all with unique challenges and circumstances.
“It’s like doing a puzzle, trying to connect them so they’re becoming knowledgeable, so once we’re out of the picture, they can be the best version of themselves.”
Factors like behavioral health issues, injuries, and the challenges of transitioning to civilian life put Veterans at greater risk of homelessness. Alexia and her team embrace a housing-first approach where they work to overcome barriers to housing, like finding willing landlords, while addressing the underlying causes of homelessness and building self-sufficiency.
“I wish people knew that it’s a journey,” she says. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all. Just because they’re housed doesn’t mean everything is fixed. We have to do financial literacy, budgeting, and help them communicate with landlords.”
Alexia and her team’s day-to-day work is not easy, but Alexia believes the good outweighs the bad. She recalls a particularly uplifting experience from late last year, when one of her first clients and her four children moved into their new home just before the holidays.
“They were able to get in and decorate everything,” she says.
Alexia, congratulations on your well-deserved promotion! We are fortunate to benefit from your leadership and passion; our Veteran clients are, too.
