You might have chosen a major to study, but don’t let this limit your search for research labs. Modern labs are interdisciplinary and very different from what you do in undergrad labs. Instead of limiting your search to your department, try to look at labs in all related departments. Choose labs based on the questions they’re trying to answer.💡

💡Conducting research, like many other things, leave so much room for growth and learning. A lot of research is about making mistakes! So don’t be afraid to make errors as they can be one of the greatest learning opportunities as a researcher!

To conduct your own research and take on projects on your own, talking with grad students and your PI can help you communicate your technical and career interests as well as learn about other potential projects. Submitting a PURA proposal is also a great way to conduct your own research supervised by Georgia Tech faculty!

This week’ research tip is about interpersonal skills! These are relationship and communication skills that can occur outside of actual research but are important to have!💡

💡This week’ research tip is about advocating for yourself. One of the purposes of undergrad research is to discover your personal interests so don’t feel bad if you feel overwhelmed or develop interest in other areas of research. Self-advocacy can include changing your workload, switching projects, or switching labs. Do what makes you feel comfortable and allows you to truly learn what you want!

This week’s research tip is on mentor relationships! Building and maintaining a good relationship with mentors can be beneficial to your research and networking skills. Develop a good mentor relationship by interacting with your PI and various grad students, and don’t be afraid to ask questions or share your ideas. Maintaining these relationships are just as important as starting them, so it’s always good to keep them updated every now and then!💡

💡Research Tip #2: Work on Your Skills!
For this week’s research tip, we want to emphasize working on your skills! There are some skills that won’t necessarily be taught to you in a lab or other research settings. Taking notes, reading relevant papers, and looking up protocols are all examples of outside research that is a part of the undergraduate research experience!

💡This week’s research tip is about lab environments! Lab environments tend to vary from very hands-on to a more independent, hands-off approach, but don’t be intimidated if it seems hands off! One way to navigate through this is to take cues from graduate students or senior members interacting with your PI. They want you to learn and grow, so questions and interaction will always be encouraged!

Today’s school spotlight focuses on the College of Engineering. Georgia Tech’s College of Engineering is creating tomorrow’s leaders in engineering, science, and technology. This College awards more engineering degrees to women and underrepresented minorities than any other institution in the United States, and as part of public university, it remains an excellent value for an elite engineering education.

In this year’s Undergraduate Research Spring Symposium, Georgia Tech’s College of Engineering will be represented by 47 students giving oral presentations and 62 students giving poster presentations. Presentations will cover topics ranging from the fields of Biomedical engineering to Aerospace Engineering to Mechanical Engineering to everything in between! Don’t forget, the Annual Undergraduate Spring Research Symposium is only 7 days away! Join us on Thursday, April 22nd for this exciting event!

The Research Fair is a gathering of 30+ researchers across campus in various disciplines ready to share their research with you! If you're unsure what you're interested in, this is a great opportunity to walk around and see a great variety of research topics that are being investigated across campus. Think of it as a very casual career fair, but for research!
So far, we have labs from CoC, CoS, and CoE attending, with more still signing up! This semester's Research Fair will be held on Thursday, April 8th from 11AM to 1PM EST via Gatherly.

We are inviting undergraduate students to apply to present their research at the 2021 Undergraduate Research Symposium, on Thursday, April 22. This is Georgia Tech's largest undergraduate research colloquium and is a great opportunity for students to share their research with classmates and faculty from all over campus.

In addition, we will be hosting two workshops designed to help students showcase their work in the best way possible. Students can register for either Tuesday, April 13 at 11 AM [virtual] OR Thursday, April 15 at 11 AM [in-person].

The deadline to apply for the Research Symposium is Friday, March 26.

Calling all Georgia Tech undergraduate student researchers! Apply today for the Summer 2021 President's Undergraduate Research Awards (PURA). PURA offers $1,500 maximum salary awards to undergraduate students conducting research who are being mentored by a faculty member or GTRI scientist.
