João Felisberto was born on this date in 1880. He was an Afro Brazilian sailor and activist.

João Cândido Felisberto was born in Encruzilhada do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, to a poor Afro Brazilian family. His father and mother were former slaves. He entered the Brazilian Navy in 1894 at the age of 13. The conditions for Brazilian sailors at the time were harsh, and being Black, Felisberto suffered prejudice from the white officers in the Brazilian Navy. While experiencing Newcastle’s living conditions and increased freedoms, Felisberto realized how unacceptable conditions were in the Brazilian Navy.

The sailors had many secret meetings in Rio de Janeiro, planning a strategy to stop the corporal punishment still imposed in the new Navy. In November 1910, the flogging of a sailor, against Navy regulations (250 strokes instead of the allowed 25 strokes), was a contributing factor to the ‘Revolt of the Lash.’ Sailors took control of two Brazilian battleships and two other major warships. Their demands included the abolition of torture as a form of punishment and improved living conditions in the Brazilian Navy. Felisberto was the leader of the movement.

The new Brazilian president, Hermes da Fonseca, promised the end of “Chibata,” but the government later returned to this promise. In the revolt’s aftermath, Felisberto and others were either arrested, tortured, or murdered in prison. Felisberto contracted tuberculosis, but he recovered and was eventually released. The Brazilian press nicknamed him “Almirante Negro” or the “Black Admiral” for his actions. After his release, he sank into poverty and experienced discrimination, working in a harbor on a meager salary. He was arrested again in 1930 but was soon released. In 1933, he joined the integralist movement. In 1938, an integralist uprising was quickly crushed by the Brazilian military, with fewer than twenty deaths, and the group was outlawed....

🇳🇬 Known for its vibrant colours, fashion, horse parades, historical significance and traditional performances, Ojude Oba is a century-old celebration which showcases the rich heritage and cultural pride of the Ijebu people of Nigeria.

Nigerian officials say thousands of people gathered for this year’s Ojude Oba festival in Ogun State.

Ojude Oba, meaning “The King’s Court,” is a time for the community to come together and pay homage to the Awujale, the paramount ruler of Ijebuland.

Typically celebrated on the third day after Eid al-Kabir (Eid-el-Adha) Muslim festivities, the festival was an opportunity for the first Muslim converts to thank and offer prayers to the Awujale, for allowing them to practise their religion.

Over the years, the present ruler, Oba Sikiru Adetona, Ogbagba II, revitalised it into an event that attracts spectators from different parts of the world.

From traditional dances to the latest fashion in traditional aso-oke fabrics, this festival is a spectacle of unity and cultural pride.

Will you be at the next one?

As we continue our Superwoman Saturday Series we'd like to honor Evelyn Gibson Lowery the legacy she blessed up with in .o.m.e.n.inc where over 45 years of work for the movement continues...

Below is an excerpt of this amazing history and mission. You can read on at www.SCLCWomenInc.com:

sclc/W.O.M.E.N. Inc., has been in the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement for more than four decades. Our founder, Dr. Evelyn Gibson Lowery was the quintessential civil rights wife, woman and warrior. She is fondly remembered as a wise woman of substance, who was shaped by the Movement and motivated by her mate and life partner, Dr. Rev. Joseph Lowery.

Dr. Evelyn Lowery understood the contribution of women in the Movement, while critically important, often went unrecognized and underappreciated. In 1979, Dr. Lowery, passionate about issues impacting women and children, summoned a group of women to her home. From this gathering, sclc/W.O.M.E.N. Inc. was born.

Dr. Lowery was constantly forging new territory for the organization. In 1980 sclc/W.O.M.E.N Inc. hosted the first national conference on the Survival of the Black Family. A national conference for youth was added the following year. On April 4, 1980 sclc/W.O.M.E.N. Inc., held its first Annual Drum Major for Justice Awards Banquet in recognition of those who have been in the forefront of the battle for justice.

In 1987, sclc W.O.M.E.N. Inc., founded the“Original” Evelyn G. Lowery Civil Rights Heritage Tour, an annual two-day motor coach tour throughout the state of Alabama. Recognizing others and ensuring that others never forget their contributions, sclc/W.O.M.E.N. Inc. has erected 13 monuments along the civil rights trail. Never has this tour been more important than now when Black History/American History is under attack by right wing politicians.

MEET KIDPRENEUR AMBASSADOR NOMINEE PHILADELPHIA

Neijae Graham-Henries, is the world’s youngest female barber.

She’s a tiny force in a male dominated profession, a distinction she earned in 2018, after mastering a barbering course in her hometown, Philly, PA!
Although, Neijae is known coast-to- coast as the determined little girl who acquired barbering skills at the tender age of seven—it’s her compassion that makes her special.

She enjoys using her craft to help serve underprivileged communities, and so she gives free cuts and shape-ups to children and the homeless.
Her barbering “give-back” has been reported in Now This News, Buzz Feed, and The Philadelphia Tribune.

Neijae’s made appearances on The Steve Harvey Show , WCAU and KYW and with more than 3,500 followers on IG , she continues to cut hair for the needy.

Neijae’s looking forward to furthering her tonsorial skill and plans to attend college —cutting as much hair as she can on the way to her degree and a barbershop of her own.
