Using a walker correctly is crucial for several reasons:

1. **Safety**: Proper use of a walker helps prevent falls and injuries. Incorrect use can lead to instability, causing the user to trip or lose balance.

2. **Mobility**: A walker provides essential support for those with mobility issues. Using it correctly ensures that the user can move around more efficiently and with less effort.

3. **Posture**: Proper use of a walker helps maintain good posture. Incorrect use can lead to poor posture, which can cause back and neck pain over time.

4. **Independence**: Using a walker correctly allows users to maintain a level of independence, performing daily activities without constant assistance.

5. **Muscle Strain Prevention**: Correct usage distributes weight evenly, preventing unnecessary strain on muscles and joints.

6. **Confidence**: Knowing how to use a walker properly can boost the user's confidence, encouraging them to move more and stay active.

Ensuring that a walker is used correctly involves proper height adjustment, correct hand placement, and learning the right walking technique. Consulting with a healthcare professional for training and adjustments can be very beneficial.

Stay Hydrated:
Drink eight or more glasses of water or fruit juices daily to stay hydrated. Avoid alcoholic and caffeinated drinks like soda, coffee, and tea, as they can lead to dehydration quickly. Adjust your intake based on physical activity or hot weather.

Stay Indoors During Extreme Heat:
In extreme heat and humidity, slow down outdoor activities between 10 am and 4 pm to prevent excessive exertion. Opt for morning or evening activities instead.

Stay in Cool Environments:
Seek air-conditioned spaces when it's hot and humid. Visit locations with air conditioning, like movie theaters, malls, or cooling centers. Contact local resources for assistance.

Dress Appropriately for the Weather:
Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, and breathable clothing, such as cotton, in light colors that reflect sunlight. Protect your skin and eyes with hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
Protect Your Skin and Eyes:

Know Medication Side Effects:
Be aware that some medications may increase sun sensitivity. Discuss any concerns with your doctor and review medication side effects.

Maintain Communication and Emergency Contacts:
Keep a list of emergency numbers handy for easy access. Stay connected with friends, family, caregivers, and emergency contacts for support during hot weather conditions.

Do you feel dizzy when you sit up from a laying position? This is called orthostatic hypotension, also known as postural hypotension. This occurs when blood vessels don't constrict (tighten) as you sit up, which can temporarily delay blood flow to the brain. This can cause a lightheaded feeling, dizziness, or even fainting. One way to combat this is to get up slowly, sit for a minute then go to standing position.

Staying hydrated during the summer is crucial due to the increased risk of dehydration from heat and outdoor activities. Here are six effective ways to stay hydrated:

Drink Plenty of Water:

Carry a water bottle and sip regularly throughout the day.
Aim for at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily, more if you're active or in a very hot environment.

Eat Hydrating Foods:

Consume fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as watermelon, cucumbers, strawberries, oranges, and lettuce.

These foods also provide essential vitamins and minerals.

Avoid Excessive Caffeine and Alcohol:

Both caffeine and alcohol can act as diuretics, increasing urine production and leading to dehydration.

Opt for water or herbal teas instead.

Use Rehydration Solutions:

For intense activities or extreme heat, use oral rehydration solutions (ORS) or sports drinks that contain electrolytes.

These help replenish lost salts and minerals, preventing dehydration.

Monitor Your Urine Color:

Check the color of your urine as an indicator of hydration. Light yellow usually indicates good hydration, while dark yellow suggests you need more fluids.
Make adjustments to your fluid intake based on this simple check.

Set Reminders:

Use apps or set alarms to remind you to drink water throughout the day.
Create a schedule, such as drinking a glass of water every hour, to maintain consistent hydration.

By following these tips, you can help ensure that you stay properly hydrated and healthy during the hot summer months.

Fall prevention: Simple tips to prevent falls.
Falls put you at risk of serious injury. Prevent falls with these simple fall prevention measures, from reviewing your medications to hazard-proofing your home.

Make an appointment with your health care provider
Start by making an appointment with your health care provider. To assess your risk and discuss fall prevention strategies, your health care provider may want to talk about the following: Your medications. Any previous falls. Your health condition.

Keep moving
Physical activity can go a long way toward fall prevention. With your health care provider's OK, consider activities such as walking, water workouts or tai chi — a gentle exercise that involves slow and graceful dance-like movements. These activities reduce the risk of falls by improving strength, balance, coordination and flexibility.

Wear sensible shoes
Light up your living space
Use assistive devices

If you do fall and are referred to physical therapy, our therapists will assess you and get you back to feeling good again.
