On Juneteenth we celebrate freedom, but freedom isn't just a lack of oppression.
Today we also celebrate the love, teaching, and community black people in this country have cultivated since long before June 1865.
At Soccer in the Streets we can call upon heroes like our founder, Carolyn McKenzie. And our amazing coaches like Harvey D. Robbins , Dawit Selassie , Tiffany Finley, and Abu Tommy.
However, the community we've built and the history we remember would be nothing without the parents, caregivers, community members, and children that make Soccer in the Streets a force for good.
Happy Juneteenth, y'all 🙌🏾
>We are proud to partner with Common Goal on the stateside portion of their "Create the Space" mental health initiative.
>Our Executive Director, Elijah Miranda and our Director of Operations, Chelsea Wood, have begun an online training course that is being offered to coaches all around the country!
>Following the first session, Elijah had these comments about the experience:
>"Create the Space" is an important initiative that emphasizes the value of teaching soccer coaches to have conversations about mental health with their players. Soccer in the Streets is proud to partner with Common Goal and contribute to creating safe environments on the soccer pitch for all players.

Friendship, Leadership, and Learning are all part of what makes girls sports such a powerful force for development. Here are some shots from this weekend!!
“I want to throw away that feeling in the air, that women’s sports are less than”...
Powerful words from this month's "Passion for the Pitch" feature, Grace Henderson -Eastside Program Coordinator.
This may be but Grace's work is felt all year long. She's a wonderful part of our team and a blessing to the kids of Soccer in the Streets, particularly all the young women she takes under her wing.

Welcome to Women's History Month!! In March we put much needed additional respect on the lives, work, and contributions of women across the world!!
At Soccer in the Streets women have been the life blood of our organization, from our founder to our continuing leadership, and on the field with many coaches and players!!
As much as "history" is a focal of the commemorative, the present and the future are equally important!! This collage tells many stories of women and girls who have come before and others who are making their way today, hopefully blossoming into amazing futures they build themselves💪🏾
You might have heard... Soccer in the Streets is turning thirty five years old in 2024!!
Back in 1989 Carolyn McKenzie and the late Graham Tutt conspired to create something new in Atlanta...
A youth soccer development organization that focused on opportunity and access as opposed to performance and profits.
35 years later we are activating locations from Doraville to downtown East Point, and from West End to Kensington! Today our goals are the same: soccer, youth, and community!! 🙏🏾

ONE WEEK!! Next Saturday our little ballers will hit the pitch for Spring games!! But, practice makes perfect and our coaches are running the kids through drills, as well as, SEL & team building exercises 🙌🏾
Black (Soccer) History Month continues...
In the 1990s Soccer in the Streets executed dozens of "Super Soccer Shows" all across America.
Each event included several elements from skills demonstrations to check presentations and (of course) lots of fun kicking the ball!
Here's a brief walk through one of our many photo albums showing off the Super Shows.
Our founder, Carolyn McKenzie, was a constant fixture at these events sporting her logo gear, making connections, and doing her best to inspire soccer programs to begin.
As we dig deeper into the archives we're finding that some of these events may have been roots that connect to programs still in operation today!
>As we've shared many times, at Soccer in the Streets, coaches are the strength of what we do, and we are blessed to have a fantastic coaching core.
>In fact, we spoke with a parent today who had wonderful things to say about each of the coaches her children have learned from. But great coaches don't fall off trees; consistent and effective training is required.
>Each pre-season our programs team and their leader, Chelsea Wood, put together a coach training session intended to refine the process for our standing coaches and build new understanding for those just joining us.
>This spring is no different; two weeks ago the team assembled at Uptown Atlanta, in their incredible meeting/event/convention space, and spent the day learning new techniques and reviewing our standard practice session plan.
>In conversation with one of our coordinators, I was quite gratified to hear that there was a lot of listening and input from all the coaches in attendance. He also remarked that the organization and logistics behind this session were the best he had seen.
>We can't wait to hit the pitch and have a fantastic season in communities all across the city!
IMPORTANT UPDATE!!
>Greetings, SITS Families!! As many of you know, demand for our soccer programming has been very strong over the past few years, and waitlists have become a part of our registration process. Here's a waitlist update for the upcoming >season!
>SPRING 2024 PRACTICES are starting NEXT WEEK. All fully registered families will have two weeks to engage with practice and be included in the team roster.
>At the end of that period, waitlisted families will be invited to join practices, in the order of their registration. Please feel free to DM us if you have further questions!! We look forward to seeing your players on the pitch!!
We were honored to participate 🙏🏾
