"I write entirely to find out what I'm thinking, what I'm looking at, what I see and what it means. What I want and what I fear."
—Joan Didion
, Joan Didion was an American author and journalist, considered one of the pioneers of New Journalism, a style of news writing that used literary techniques that were uncommon at the time. Didion's blend of stark wit and intellect with graceful prose has earned her great esteem from generations of journalists and writers.
Didion was born in Sacramento, California. Because her father was in the Army, the family constantly moved around, and she did not regularly attend school. Despite this, she was still an avid learner and spent much of her time typing out the works of Ernest Hemingway to learn about sentence structure. Later, Didion attended UC Berkley where she received a bachelor's degree in English. Her senior year, she won first place in an essay contest sponsored by Vogue. This earned her a position in New York as a research assistant at the magazine.
Joan Didion spent 7 years at Vogue, during which she wrote her first novel, RUN, RIVER while feeling homesick for California. She later critiqued her work on the novel, claiming it to be a work of nostalgia that depicted a rural Californian life she never experienced. However, the novel still received positive reviews and helped sustain her career as a writer.
After the publication of RUN, RIVER, Didion had 17 other works published, including works of fiction, nonfiction, and screenplays, before beginning to write THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING when she was 70 years old. This autobiographical book is considered one of her best, and recounts the time when her daughter fell seriously ill-- septic and comatose in the ICU--and her husband suddenly died of a heart attack. The book documents the grief she experienced during this period of illness and death and helped her cope with her feelings.
Didion won many awards in her life, including the National Book Award for Nonfiction for THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING, a National Book Foundation medal, and a Writers Guild of America award, amongst many others.
