Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) and Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts (BOPA) are requesting applications from Baltimore City-based mural artists for an inspiring, education-based mural in time for the new school year!

RIF is partnering with Amazon to create a reading corner in a library in Curtis Bay Elementary in Baltimore. The goal is to create a joyful, positive environment that encourages reading and offers children the opportunity to choose from a wide selection of high-quality, diverse books. One element of this library is an accompanying mural that will showcase the joyful emotion that RIF inspires through its reading programs and content.

“The mission is clear. Our directive is pretty straightforward. It’s when you get into the details of what we do that the organization has been structurally and, in my opinion, needlessly bifurcated. It’s even in the way that we talk about who the teams are: there’s the festivals team, the events team, and the Arts Council.”

CALL TO ACTION] — Deadline Wednesday, July 17, 10:00am — From Nicholas Cohen, Executive Director of Maryland Citizens for the Arts (): “Governor Wes Moore has announced significant reductions in state funding, reallocating nearly $150 million to cover rising costs of government services. Within this cut, the Governor has recommended a $437,000 cut to the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC ).

While the reduction may seem small, the proposed cut could eliminate hundreds of arts grants that go directly to community-based groups. Many of these groups serve historically underinvested communities, provide youth programming, and offer services not found in any other sector.

These cuts come at a challenging time, as our community is still recovering from the financial effects of COVID and significant inflationary pressures. Such a cut could have devastating consequences for our field. The cuts will be considered at a Board of Public Works meeting [Wednesday, July 17] so time is of the essence.

Please oppose the proposed cuts by reaching out to the board... [And] please share this with your networks. If you have a direct contact within the Moore administration, you can also send them the letter.”

We are thrilled to announce the 2024 MASB Artist Travel Prize winner: Sherry Insley ()

The Municipal Art Society of Baltimore (MASB) Artist Travel Prize is a yearly collaboration between MASB and BOPA, now in its eighth year. The $7,000 prize funds essential travel for artists to enhance their studio practice, with past winners exploring new influences in countries like Morocco, Japan, Peru, Mexico, Ghana, and Germany, as well as across the U.S.

Insley will travel along the Mid-Atlantic Coast and Chesapeake Bay Watershed, and to Nienhagen, Germany, to document ghost forests. Her Ghost Forest series explores the impact of rising salinity, coastal erosion, and climate change through photography and light-sensitive materials. The project features large-scale black-and-white photography, video, sound installations, and historic photographic processes such as lumens, cyanotypes, image transfers, and anthotypes.

Ghost forests occur when saltwater intrudes into freshwater ecosystems due to storms, rising sea levels, and climate change, killing trees and leaving behind skeletal trunks. Insley’s project aims to bring visibility to this stark consequence of climate change.
