“The Taliban’s return to power in 2021 was like a death sentence for Yousif and his young family. They fell to their knees and prayed for God’s protection. Miraculously, the Taliban inexplicably bypassed their home.”

It's been 3 years since the fall of Kabul in 2021. Commemorating a day like today is a poignant reminder of the thousands of human stories behind the headlines.

Yousif's testimony of faith and resilience is one of those stories.

Yousif’s escape from Afghanistan with his young family and their journey to seek asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border highlights the ongoing need for compassion and action in response to the displacement crises. As we remember this day, let’s commit to walking alongside families like Yousif's, ensuring they find safety and a chance to rebuild their lives.

The World Health Organization has declared the mpox outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other countries in Africa a global health emergency. A new strain of the virus emerged in DRC last year and cases have been confirmed in neighboring countries that have not reported mpox before, including Burundi, Kenya and Rwanda. Moreover, suspected mpox cases have emerged since 2023 in Chad and Sudan. For years, World Relief has been boldly engaging with urgent crises in these countries in partnership with the church and we need your support today. Will you rush aid in this hour of need?

Please pray for those affected by this deadly virus and send aid to those suffering today! ➡️ 🔗 https://give.worldrelief.org/site/Donation2?1578.donation=form1&df_id=1578&mfc_pref=T

Check out our latest blog.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work amidst a humanitarian crisis? Or maybe you’re wondering what a humanitarian crisis even is.

World Relief’s Senior Program Officer, Amanda Patterson, reflects on her experience working in the humanitarian sector for more than a decade. She shares personal stories and answers questions like — what if my team and I do everything in our power to help, and we still don’t see the change we’ve pushed so hard for? Or worse yet, what if the situation gets worse, or disaster strikes again?

You don’t want to miss this thoughtful personal testimony from Amanda. Read more on the blog: https://worldrelief.org/blog-world-humanitarian-day/?utm_source=SM&utm_medium=FB&utm_campaign=Blog

“The recent Israeli strikes on another school and mosque sheltering displaced people this weekend is a devastating injustice and humanitarian tragedy. Innocent civilians seeking safe haven and a place of prayer in the midst of war should never be a target. Nor should places like these ever be used for military purposes. We continue to urge the international community to seek bold solutions for peace to bring an end to this escalating conflict and prevent further civilian deaths."

— Myal Greene, President & CEO, World Relief

Part of our advocacy work is amplifying facts and information that can inform policy makers in Washington DC.

Last month, Chelsea Sobolik, our Director of Government Relations, hosted an event on Capitol Hill entitled “Borders and Beliefs: What Evangelicals Think about Immigration in 2024”. She presented recent polling data from Lifeway Research, exploring evangelical views on immigration.

The event also featured a thoughtful panel discussion with Aerlande Wontamo, World Relief’s Senior Vice President for U.S. Programs, Hannah Daniel, Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission’s Director Public Policy, and Abiola Afolayan, Bread for the World’s Director, Policy & Research Institute.

As Christians, we are called to respond to crises with faith, not fear. It’s a tough calling, but it’s ours to walk in. How are you responding in faith?

On the blog, we asked three non-profit leaders in Haiti for an update on the violence and humanitarian crisis that has been escalating since January. Their response was overwhelmingly clear:

➡ the situation is dire
➡ the crisis is multi-faceted
➡ people are in desperate need of help
➡ and violence does not define Haiti: political corruption and armed groups are not the voice of the Haitian people

Right now, more than 578,000 people are internally displaced and more than a million are facing hunger and malnutrition. World Relief is partnering with local organizations to support displaced people at 10 camps throughout Port au Prince.

Ten months into the Israel-Gaza crisis, it feels overwhelming and downright heartbreaking. The scars of the Hamas attacks on Israeli farming communities last October are still fresh, thousands of Palestinians have died and the war drags on with echoes across the region. Amidst the crisis, World Relief continues leaning into humanitarian principles to make a difference.

As humanitarians, we address human suffering wherever it’s found, without taking sides. We engage in conflicts driven by a shared set of principles: humanity, impartiality, neutrality and independence. These aren’t just words to us; they’re the very foundation of our work.

Did you know that some of the world’s most urgent crises aren’t receiving the resources they need? It doesn’t have to be that way.

World Relief and our partners in the Integral Alliance, a collaboration of 21 Christian aid agencies based in 14 countries, released a new report on these neglected crises and the factors driving them. In it, we call for a collective and effective response.

Last month, World Relief Spokane had the joy of welcoming a new family into their community! And they were greeted not only by the Spokane welcome crew, but also by another family fresh off their flight, who spontaneously joined the celebration of their arrival. That’s the kindness we love to see. 💙

Happy International Day of Friendship! 🌍💕

At World Relief we’re building welcoming communities that foster friendship, hope and a sense of belonging.

For Julie in San Diego, this meant opening her home to Amani and her family, refugees seeking safety and a new beginning after fleeing the war in Syria.

In doing so, Julie discovered that she was both the welcomer and the welcomed as Amani opened her life and heart to Julie. Soon, the home they shared was filled with laughter and joy as Julie and Amani shared meals, learned from one another and became dear friends.

Today, we celebrate the power of friendship to create belonging and restore hope!

In recent years, the U.S.-Mexico border has become a central point of conversations not only in the political arena, but also in our communities, our churches and around our family tables.

On the blog, Liliana Reza, World Relief’s Director of Border Engagement, shares 5 things to consider when talking about the U.S.-Mexico border.

As followers of Jesus, it’s important for us to engage conversations in a way that leads to deeper empathy, understanding and a widening perspective.

We love a sing-along!

In Burundi, we’ve opened 6 early childhood development centers for refugee children under 5. These centers will serve 300 children living in refugee camps.

Refugee children are at heightened risk of trauma and are more likely to experience gaps in education. Through our early childhood development centers, we’re creating safe places for young children to learn, grow and thrive — even in the midst of displacement.

As we continue to expand early childhood programming in Burundi, we aim to reach 3,000 children in refugee camps and from communities that host refugees.

We are a world connected — that’s why we’re boldly responding to the displacement crisis and its impacts on communities around the world, likely including your own.
On the blog, learn how our “here and there” approach meets urgent needs in Ukraine, DR Congo, Sudan, at our southern border and in communities throughout the U.S.

“After decades of serving displaced communities “here and there,” our passion for and dedication to this work is driven not only by recognizing those experiencing displacement as precious image bearers of God, but as our neighbors, friends and coworkers. People whose fates and stories are inextricably linked with ours…”
