Our are a family! That's especially true for the three generations of the kitchen team members working for , a Humanim social enterprise, serving the Freestate ChalleNGe Academy: Brenda Clash, her daughter Niki Crawford and Niki’s son Omarion Crawford.

It’s a family affair in the Edgewood kitchen where Humanim prepares meals for young people in the Freestate program.

Brenda, affectionately known as Ms. B or Momma B around the kitchen, is a cook and assistant manager who has been with Humanim for over a year but has been working in kitchens for decades.

Daughter Niki Crawford joined the Humanim team at Edgewood about ten months ago. Her son, Omarion, started a couple months later, and all three enjoy the chance to team up to serve young people in the program.

“I love working with my mom. I’ve been working with my mom for years,” Niki says.

This , we take pride in showcasing individuals of our programs who are making big achievements and enjoying their opportunities to the fullest.

Meet Michaela, a participant in Humanim’s Developmental Disabilities program. Michaela has a vivid imagination and a big desire to work.

Despite experiencing setbacks due to the Covid pandemic, Michaela's eagerness to secure employment never waned. Guided by the dedicated Humanim team, she honed her interview skills, polished her attire, and rehearsed responses to potential questions. "Mr. Jeff helped me with job interview skills, how to dress appropriately for an interview, and practicing with interview questions," Michaela fondly recalls.

When a job opportunity arose at Oasis, a local company specializing in crafting dehumidifiers for guitars, the Humanim team immediately saw a perfect fit for Michaela. “The job was a perfect match for what Michaela was looking for,” says Maureen Howley, Manager of Humanim’s Developmental Disabilities Employment Services.

is a time to honor the disability community’s milestones and history. It marks the anniversary of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a transformative piece of legislation that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in everyday life. The ADA states that people with disabilities must have the same opportunities as everyone else to enjoy employment and live life. This groundbreaking legislation and celebratory month epitomize everything our organization has fought for and reflect the values that define Humanim.

We were founded on the belief that every human being has potential. For over 50 years, we’ve been working tirelessly to break down barriers to employment and economic equity for individuals with disabilities and socio-economic challenges.

Did you know? The term "Juneteenth" comes from blending "June" and "nineteenth." It marks the historic day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger announced the end of slavery in Texas. This was two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was instated, as Texas was the last state to abolish slavery. Today, symbolizes freedom and unity, celebrating African American heritage and the ongoing journey towards equality.

As we observe this May, Marie’s story is a powerful reminder of resilience and recovery. Throughout her life, Marie has faced numerous challenges, including repeated hospitalizations due to bipolar disorder, PTSD, substance use issues, and a range of serious medical problems. Her life took a further downturn ten years ago when her father passed away, the family home was sold, and she became homeless.

“I was suicidal, living in a shelter and estranged from my family,” Marie recalls.

In 2015, during a particularly difficult time, Marie connected with Humanim’s residential behavioral health program. This was a turning point for her as she moved out of the shelter and into an apartment. With hands-on support from the Humanim team, including individual and group counseling sessions, Marie began to rebuild her life. She stopped using drugs and took her medications regularly.

“What changed? The support network, the caring, the structure. Humanim gave me accountability and responsibility for my mental health,” Marie says. “They support you, but you have to do the work. It was different because I wasn’t able to cop out. I knew what it was like to be homeless in a shelter and didn’t want to go back to that. I wanted to change my life. I wanted my family back, and this is the road it takes.”

Meet Keion, a senior at Hammond High School and another exceptional youth apprentice we're proud to spotlight for this past . Keion discovered Humanim's Direct Support Professional (DSP) Apprenticeship program through his school counselor.

In the past, Keion applied his talent for helping others by assisting classmates with disabilities through academic support and meaningful friendships. Motivated by this experience and his passion for giving a helping hand, Keion saw this opportunity as a natural fit.

As expected, Keion has found immense satisfaction at Humanim since he started last fall. When reflecting on his experience, he credits the program for helping him come out of his shell. “I get to meet new people, and I'm really shy so it helps that I can talk and joke around with individuals in our program and staff."

Read more about Keion's journey at Humanim here: https://bit.ly/4boVHXG

We're so proud of all our youth apprentices for their incredible dedication, hard work, and enthusiasm they've shown throughout their time at Humanim. Keep up the fantastic work and continue to chase your dreams with the same passion and perseverance!

During , we had the pleasure of spotlighting our remarkable youth apprentices. Among them is Allison, a senior at Reservoir High School, who discovered Humanim’s Direct Support Professional ( ) Apprenticeship program with the guidance of her school counselor. Determined to build a path towards her desired career as an Ultrasound Technician, Allison took the opportunity to step into the healthcare field and nurture the wellbeing of others through our program.

Since beginning the apprenticeship in October 2023, Allison has learned a lot about the diverse interests and needs of those we serve. Recognizing that "every individual has their own goals and their own way of coping with everything. If you build relationships with them, then you get to know who they really are and how to help them."

Building relationships also prepared Allison for her career by allowing her to open up to staff and participants in our program. She reflects, "before I came here, I was really shy, but now I feel like I broke out of my shell."

Read more about Allison's time as a DSP Apprentice here: https://bit.ly/4bGjodz We're so proud of her achievements and growth throughout her time in our apprenticeship program.
