I first read Pride and Prejudice in high school, and have loved it ever since. Here I have the first copy that I owned, and I've recently begun collecting different editions and adaptations of the novel. While I love all of Jane Austen's work, Pride and Prejudice is my favorite because of its relatable characters and really amusing humor. Even though it was written so long ago in a completely different type of society, I love coming back to it and finding something new to love about it.
Our next feature celebrating National Book Lovers Day comes from Mike Kiel!

I’m not usually the kind of person who binges something, instead working through multiple things at once whether that’s a TV show, a game, or book. So I’m usually reading something that’s both fiction and nonfiction… or right now two fiction and one nonfiction!
Dawnshard is a novella that’s part of a big fantasy series “The Stormlight Archive” whose 5th book is coming out this winter and this is sort of book 3.5. The author Brandon Sanderson is really prolific and so a novella from him is sometimes the length of a full novel for another author. The other book is a short story anthology from 1961 allegedly approved of by Alfred Hitchcock, but a lot of the stories are older than that and I assume the Hitchcock was just branding to make it sell. I like picking up totally random things sometimes with no expectations to broaden my horizons, and this is one of those.
The non-fiction book is by Tim Alberta, a reporter mostly on religion for the Atlantic, and is about his experience seeing changes in evangelical Christianity over the past decade and exploring the history of those changes in regard to national politics. I grew up as an evangelical Christian and gave this book to a relative for Christmas, they enjoyed it and now I’m reading it so we can talk about it. Books can be a great way to bond with people!
Next we're featuring Gaby Messinger for National Book Lovers Day

I picked up Revenge of the Librarians a few weekends ago at Atomic Books (a bookstore that also sells comics and graphic novels, as well as other books) on a makeshift 'bookshop crawl' I did with my younger brother and his girlfriend. One of my favorite things about this city is how many independent bookstores and beautiful libraries we have, and I always try to share my favorite spots to buy and see books when people visit. I picked this one up because I loved the title and love reading comic collections, and I have been trying to buy more of them!
Our second feature for National Book Lovers Day is Kyle Breneman!

As you can see, I have a backlog of books that I’ve either started reading or aspire to read. At the top of the pile is Stu Weber’s Tender Warrior. It is common, these days, to run into discussions about masculinity, often unfortunately preceded by the adjective toxic. Stu’s book, which I’m currently reading through with several other guys, explores a number of positive attributes and characteristics of masculinity and calls men to live into those.
Today is National Book Lovers Day! Over the next few days, be on the lookout for some features from RLB librarians and the things we love to read. First, we're featuring Debbie Li

I've always been interested in animals, history, and biography, and the book Seabiscuit: An American Legend covers all three themes. Seabiscuit was a racehorse who captured the hearts of Americans in the 1930's. He was an underdog who surprised the racing world, and the people around him were also considered "misfits"--his jockey, owner, and trainer all had to overcome obstacles.

The storytelling was wonderful, and I enjoyed reading about the events and times of the 1930's. The author Laura Hillenbrand also wrote another great book, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption, which is on my reading bucket list.
Check out our updated library hours for the next couple weeks leading up to the start of the fall semester!
In August 2024, the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) awarded the University of Baltimore Foundation, Inc. a Recordings at Risk grant in the amount of $42,554.93 to support the project “Preserving and Providing Access to Baltimore Television News Station (WMAR), 1984-1993 (Phase Two).” Our project was one of 26 selected from 74 applications.
The Special Collections & Archives department at The University of Baltimore maintains a rich collection of WMAR-TV news recordings, including unique footage depicting significant historical events, cultural and racial issues, and political and social changes in the Baltimore region. WMAR-TV, the first television station in Maryland, began broadcasting news reports in 1947.
This phase of the project will digitize 962 U-matic and VHS tapes in the WMAR-TV collection spanning 1984 to 1993, making them available online to both local and scholarly communities through the Internet Archive website. This effort builds on the success of the first phase, which digitized 975 U-matic tapes from 1980 to 1985, funded by a previous CLIR grant in Cycle 8. The larger project ultimately aims to digitize the entire archival collection, preserving the news coverage of historical events pertaining to the Baltimore region.
Analog audiovisual recordings are at risk due to the fragility of their formats, lack of usable playback equipment, and environmental threats such as humidity and temperature. By digitizing these tapes, we will ensure the preservation of invaluable historical coverage for future generations.
The grant program is made possible by funding from the Mellon Foundation.
This is the 11th cohort of the CLIR Recordings at Risk award. Visit the CLIR announcement for more about the award and the recipients.
The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) is an independent, nonprofit organization that forges strategies to enhance research, teaching, and learning environments in collaboration with libraries, cultural institutions, and communities of higher learning.
