Positive Rabies Case in Bath.
On the evening of June 28th, a male resident of Western Ave. reported an aggressive-acting fox that had tried biting the man on his boots. The man kicked the fox away and called Bath Police.
Officers responded quickly and were able to dispatch the animal.
The fox was taken to the Health and Environmental Testing lab to be tested for rabies.
This morning, July 3, the City of Bath received confirmation from Maine DHHS Center for Disease Control and Prevention that the fox had tested positive for rabies.
Bath experienced several rabies cases in 2019 involving aggressive foxes. The last confirmed rabies case in Bath was in January of 2020 (1/6/20, grey fox).
Bath residents are advised to be cautious around wildlife and report any suspicious or sick-appearing animals. Pet owners should ensure their pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations.

Like some other area police agencies, we are now offering the Blue Envelope program for Bath residents. This program is for drivers who have a disability or condition where accommodations or awareness could be helpful. These Blue envelopes store important information and documentation that drivers can hand to officers when pulled over on a traffic stop. These envelopes can be picked up at the PD or at the Treasurer's office at Bath City Hall. This program is voluntary.
The Blue Envelope program is in coordination with the Down Syndrome Advocacy Project (DSAP). https://dsapmaine.org/
One of these moths is not like the other. 👀
Many white moths are active around the same time as browntail moths. Browntail moth adults have white wings and white legs with a reddish-brown body that leads to a rounded brown "tail." Although browntail moth adults look hairy, they do not have toxic hairs like the browntail caterpillars. That said, the moths may pick up some residual hairs when exiting the cocoon they made when they were caterpillars with toxic hairs.
Keep an eye out for browntail moth adults and reduce outdoor lighting when possible to reduce their attraction to your house and trees. 💡
