Identification of novel drugs against SARS-CoV-2 to be repurposed as COVID-19 therapeutics.
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has emerged as a major global health threat. With limited therapeutic options, the identification of safe and effective therapeutics is urgently needed. To rapidly identify new therapeutics, we can start by testing existing approved drugs for antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2. Additionally, the identification of drugs that exhibit antiviral synergy with remdesivir, a therapeutic with Emergency Use Authorization to treat COVID-19 patients, also holds potential for a rapid clinical impact on COVID-19 case management. Here we will discuss the results from our drug repurposing screens, which identify numerous new drugs with antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2, as well as drugs exhibiting antiviral synergy with remdesivir when used together. We will then discuss the potential mechanisms of action of these drug combinations and how these findings could be translated to the clinic in the future.
Interested in how viruses cause infection? Curious about the new SARS-CoV-2 variants and their potential impact?
At 3:00 PM on Thursday, February 18, we will be holding a lecture series event with Dr. Britt Glaunsinger, an expert on virology and gene expression. She will be joining us to break down how viruses invade the body and to explore the new coronavirus variants. Join us!

Berkeley Students vs Pandemics and the Berkeley Outreach Coalition (Berkeley Outreach Coalition) are holding a donation drive for California wildfire victims!
GoFundMe link: gf.me/u/y4bhpw
Since the beginning of the year, there have been over 8,400 raging wildfires which have burned over 4 million acres, destroyed more than 9,200 structures, and killed at least 31 people. With the COVID-19 pandemic going on, people who have lost their homes due to the fires do not necessarily have a safe place to go. Many people have also lost their sources of income and are struggling to get back on their feet. The raging wildfires are also contributing to the poor air quality across the state, which has major health implications such as breathing difficulties, can worsen asthma or COPD, lead to increased heart attacks, irregular heart rhythms, and in severe cases, death.
Wildfire victims are in need of basic necessities such as food, shelter, and cash in the aftermath of such disastrous fires. All proceeds will go directly to the California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief Fund (California Community Foundation) which supports both mid-term to long-term recovery efforts for those affected by California wildfires. Anything you donate helps!
As we enter midterm season, take these tips to help guide your study plans! We’ll get through this together!
