CJS supports the teaching and research mission of UC Berkeley in all areas of Japanese studies.

CJS, which supports the teaching and research mission of the university in all areas of Japanese studies, boasts 30 faculty members who serve over 2,000 undergraduate and 100 graduate students, as well as a weekly lecture series, faculty and graduate student fellowships, and frequent conferences and colloquia. Every year, specialists from Japan and throughout the world come to UC Berkeley to examine topics as diverse as recent Japanese government reforms and the early history of Japanese cinema.

Last evening, we had a great time at the 2023 Berkeley Japan Prize Award Ceremony with internationally acclaimed composer, Toshio Hosokawa. His award acceptance speech was truly inspiring. After the acceptance speech, renowned master koto player and multi-instrumentalist Kyoko Kawamura played Hosokawa’s “koto-uta”. This was followed by a conversation with Ken Ueno, Professor of the Music of Department at UCB. Ken also moderated the Q & A session with the audience towards the end of the event. Announcing 2023 JASC Program Scholarships from CJS!

The Center for Japanese Studies grants full scholarships to the Japan-American Student Conference for Berkeley undergraduate and graduate students. Awards are open to any full-time student with an interest in Japan.

The 75th JASC Conference will take place in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nagasaki from August 2 to August 26, 2023.

Service: Contributed to developing Japanese studies in the United States and promoting mutual understanding between Japan and the United States

Professor T.J. Pempel has spent over fifty years teaching and researching comparative politics, political economy, contemporary Japanese studies, and Asian regionalism at five universities in the United States, fostering the next generation of scholars. He has contributed to the development of Japanese studies in the United States and the promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and the United States.

Since 2001, for over 20 years, he has been a professor of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley and served as the director of the Institute of East Asian Studies from 2001 to 2007. During his tenure, he has endeavored to promote intellectual exchange between academics and professionals in order to connect academia with diplomacy and public policy.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Following the Japanese tradition, we would like to offer our best wishes on the first day of January for a peaceful, successful, and productive New Year. During the past year, CJS was able to host a series of exciting events in Spring and Fall 2021, and many of the recordings are available on the CJS YouTube channel. Please take a look at them if you have not done so. We believe that international collaborations and active dialogues in the fields of Japanese and East Asian Studies are even more important than ever under COVID-19 pandemic with uncertainties surrounding traveling abroad. Thank you again for your friendship and your continuing support for the missions of the CJS, and we look forward to seeing you, either virtually or in person, in the spring semester.

"Individual Stories behind the Fukushima Nuclear Tragedy"

April 30 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Japanese photojournalist Obara will give a talk about individual stories of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear workers in Fukushima. Many aspects of the accident and working conditions forced nuclear workers to be silent after the accident. Workers became invisible from the society. He had tried to uncover their individual stories. In this talk, Obara will also show his latest pictures in current Fukushima in 2021.

Kazuma Obara (Japan, 1985) is a photojournalist based in Japan. Focusing on personal stories in nuclear tragedy. He engaged in the project of Fukushima and Chernobyl nuclear accident and Bikini nuclear testing. His long term documentary series “Exposure” received First Prize in the World Press Photo 2016 People category. Obara currently works on the project of COVID-19 under the support of National Geographic Society.
