Join us for a special workshop from visiting artist Fred Beam!

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Learn how to use ASL in a dance setting with ABC Dance Choreography, a new form of Deaf Literature/Arts. ABC Choreography is a dance using ASL signs/Hand shapes. One begins with a letter in the alphabet in ASL, starting with A and moving in order through Z.

Each letter focuses on building upon the dance movement to create a specific mood, feeling, or picture in the reader’s mind. There are various types of ABC (or Alphabet) Dance. Some use all 26 letters, while others only use 5-6 of the letters in alphabetical order. Students will come up with their own choreography after learning all the required skills and vocabulary related to Deaf Dance.

INSTRUCTOR: Fred M. Beam has been a visual artist since he was a child. He won first place in the Temple Terrace Art Competition in Tampa, FL. when he was Senior in high school. His earliest artistic work appeared in NTID program pageant book, Black Deaf Advocate Pageants, Gallaudet Dance Company concert, just to name a few.

Dancers ages 16 to 99 are encouraged to attend and students can pay $21 for class or use a pass. DTP also accepted.

SADC is excited to welcome back Alexa Coleman to our faculty, teaching 3 Beginning Hip-Hop classes to youth this fall semester:
ages 5-7 (Allstars )
ages 5-7 (Block Busters )
ages 8-11 (Beg. Hip-Hop )

CLASS DESCRIPTION: Alexa’s classes will be all about the basics of Hip-Hop. Not only will students be learning to name and execute new moves but also how to incorporate them into their own creative movement, developing their movement vocabulary and cultivating their strength and range in self-expression.

INSTRUCTOR: Born and raised in San Francisco, CA, Alexa Coleman has been dancing for approximately 12 years. Her dance journey began when she joined a Hip-Hop team. There she was also introduced to Jazz, African, and Pom, all while being able to perform, travel, and compete. After about 5 years, she expanded and began to see dance as more than just a hobby and began traveling for classes, conventions, and auditions. It wasn’t until high school that Alexa was trained in ballet and contemporary. After that, at Saint Mary’s College of California, Alexa was introduced to modern and Ballet Folklorico. It was from here that Alexa was also introduced to the Shawl-Anderson Dance Center as a teacher’s assistant (TA) and has been teaching here ever since.

For dancers with at least 3 years of ballet training, Intermediate classes really focus on technique, alignment, and fluidity of movement. Students coming into Intermediate classes will have worked several years learning dance vocabulary, building skills to see and can learn movement at a quick pace, and apply corrections from a teacher. Intermediate students can confidently reverse material and work in class without the need to follow the teacher to know the exercises and combination.

The values we share!

Shawl-Anderson Dance Center is closing out the FY24 at the end of the month. We are seeking to raise an additional $40K to offset and support valuable programming as well as scholarships for all levels and ages.

We have much to commemorate as we gather together to raise $40,000. Shawl- Anderson Dance Center has successfully widened the circle, expanding our center into five locations!
while saluting our 66th Birthday, honoring our revered angel donors and funds that supported our Fiscally Sponsored Artist program.

Our remaining goal of $40k empowers both of our scholarship funds to uphold that no student is turned away from taking dance class policy. In jubilant celebration, our community arts center serves over 1,000 people of all ages each week with legendary pedagogy and impactful life-changing movement experiences. To that end we gather to thank you for staying involved throughout our programming. Our youth and pre professional artists, and all of our 20 fiscally sponsored companies express abundant appreciation for your generosity.

Give if you can! https://www.shawl-anderson.org/support

Rosangela Silvestre is teaching here Wed night at 7:30pm.

"An invitation to experience the process of Silvestre Technique with its creator, Rosangela Silvestre, from Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. Silvestre Techinique is an evolving contemporary dance technique that conditions and prepares the body, mind, and spirit of the dancer to find their expression potential. Working with "the Body Universe," symbolized by three triangles on the body, the technique emphasizes the connection of the physical body with the Elements of Nature and the Cosmos."
